AFDB TO SUPPORT PEASANT FARMING PROJECT IN ANGOLA’S BIE PROVINCE

CUNHINGA, ANGOLA– The African Development Bank (AfDB) is to finance an integrated local agricultural project for peasant farmerss in Cunhinga and Cuemba municipalities in the central Angolan province of Bie next year.

The head of an AfDB delegation which made a working visit to the project areas this week, Jean Marie Meng, said after a consultation with farmers and economic agents held in Cunhinga municipality, that the Bank was supporting the programme, an initiative of the Angolan government, to help the region grow.

He added that the idea is to support peasant farmers in Cunhinga and Cuemba municipalities through local associations and co-operatives, as well as to integrate young people in the cultivation of various food crops such as maize, beans, soybeans, sweet potatoes, manioc, sesame and peanuts.

Implementation of the projects will done by a partnership of the Ministries of Youth and Sports, Social Action, Environment, Agriculture, Transport and other agenciess.

A representative of the Angolan Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Felizmino da Costa, acknowledged the commitment of the AfDB to finance projects in the field of agriculture in the country.
