Angola may create maritime spatial plan

Luanda – A Marine Spatial Plan to map and define rules for the arrangement of the use of Angola’s marine areas may be created by next September.

The announcement came from the environmentalist Vladimiro Russo, while speaking to the press on the sidelines of the meeting of the National Coordinating Group for the Planning of Marine Space in Angola on Thursday.

The expert said that the plan will allow the management of existing and future activities, focusing on what is happening now in the country.

Sectors such as tourism, fisheries, oil, civil construction, environment, transport and others intervene in the marine area.

The consultant in drafting the plan stressed that there are defined areas for certain activities, and explained that artisanal fishing cannot go beyond 4 nautical miles, and semi-industrial fishing cannot come within 4 nautical miles.

The document will be submitted to the Cabinet Council for approval.

The initiative is in line with the national goals of the National Development Plan (2018-2022) and the Long Term Development Strategy (Angola 2025).
