ANGOLA: PRES LOURENCO IN CAPE VERDE FOR CPLP SUMMIT

LUANDA, Angolan head of State JoAPound o Lourenco is expected in Cape Verde Tuesday to attend the 12th Summit of Heads of State of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP) set for Tuesday and Wednesday in island of Sal.

The Conference, which comprises CPLP Heads of State and/ or Government from member states, is tasked with defining and guiding the general policy and strategies.

It also adopts legal instruments necessary for the implementation of the present Statutes, however, delegate these powers to the Council of Ministers.

The body which meets ordinarily every two years has the competence to create institutions for the proper functioning of the organisation to elect a rotating Chairman for a two-year term as well as the Executive Secretary of the CPLP.

On another development, representatives of the ruling party in Angola, MPLA and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) Monday discussed political and social matters , under the cooperation relations between the political organisations.

This was during a meeting that gathered the Secretary General of MPLA Paulo Kassoma, and the member of Secretariat and Political Commission of Central Committee of PCP, Jose Capucho.

Both reviewed their parties’ actions focused on economic and social development of the two countries.

Jose Capucho, who has been in Luanda since Saturday on five-day working visit to Angola, told the press that the meeting was fruitful, he praised the friendship and cooperation ties between PCP and MPLA.

As for the ongoing political transition process in MPLA, related to the change of leadership, Jose Capucho described as “exemplary”.

The last meeting between MPLA and PCP delegations took place in June 2016 in Luanda.

The MPLA is set to hold its Extraordinary Congress on Sept 8 to elect its leader, in replacement of Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has been at the helm of the political organisation since 1979 following the death of Antonio Agostinho Neto, then President of People’s Republic of Angola.
