ANGOLAN RAILWAYS SIGNS 169 MLN USD CONTRACT FOR 10 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES

LUANDA– Angolan Railways has signed a contract valued at 169.3 million US dollars for the supply of 10 diesel locomotives with a consortium comprising Andrade Gutierrez and Zagope Angola.

The contract was signed here Monday by the Deputy Director-General of the National Railways Institute of Angola (INCFA), Aime Tombuele, and the director of Andrade Gutierrez, JA�lio Oliveira. Transport Minister of Transport Ricardo de Abreu witnessed the signing of the contract.

The contract will also include the provision of technical assistance for two years to Railways to maintain the 10 locomotives which will be sourced from Germany and China. The provision of service and technical assistance includes the maintenance of rolling stock, the training of train drivers and maintenance personnel for workshop equipment and their organization.

The trains will run on the Bungo-Baia route in the province of Luanda.

Andrade Gutierrez director Oliveira said they are modern, two-way locomotives with four carriages, and capable of operating at a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

Luanda Railway (CFL) Administrator Abel Lopes said that the trains would provide better rail services and solve the problems which had been encountered in the sector.

As part of the process of rehabilitation and modernization of Angolan Railways, the Government has since 2007 acquired 102 new locomotives, 23 from China and 79 from General Electric of the United States.
