CAN’2024: Angola play in Kumassi for Group E

Luanda – Angola face away Ghana on March 23 in Kumassi, for the third round of the Group E qualifying for the final phase of the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations(CAN ‘2024) to take place in Côte d’Ivoire.

The two teams that co-lead group E with four points will clash again on November 27 in Luanda, for round four.

Central African Republic and Madagascar, who have one point each in third and fourth place, also part of Group E.

Senegal are the current continental champions, a title achieved in the 2021 edition after beating Egypt in the final, 4-2, on penalties, after (0-0) in regular time and overtime.

Handball: African champions train in Egypt

Cairo – The Women’s Senior National Handball Team have been working since Monday in the city of El-Kom-Menoufia, north of Cairo, as part of the preparations for the 26th edition of the Women’s World Championship, to be played from 30 November to 17 December in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, this year.

The training programme of the national team in Egypt will end on 05 March in which they will have two friendly matches with the Egyptian national team.

The two mentioned matches that will be held at the initiative of the Egyptian Handball Federation are in the framework of the first week of the International Handball Federation (IHF), with the aim of preparing for the handball world championship.

The national team headed by the technical director of the Handball Federation, Divaldo Ângelo, is made up of 23 people, of which 16 are athletes.

Chelcia Gabriel, Dolores do Rosário, Estefânia Venâncio, Helena Paulo, Helena de Sousa, Isabel Guialo, Juliana Machado, Liliane Mário, Marcela Tati, Márcia Manuel, Marília Quizelete, Natália Fonseca e Stélvia Pascoal, Teresa Almeida, Vilma Chissola e Suzete Cazanga, are the summoned athletes.

To recall, the National Handball Team won, in November 2022, in Dakar (Senegal), the 15th continental title during the 25th African Championship.

In history, Angola also obtained a second position and two third places.

They lost only one final, in 1991, in the city of Cairo.

Angola host Women’s Handball Pre-Olympics

Luanda – Angola will host on 10 – 12 October the senior women’s Pre-Olympic tournament, ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifying, the African Handball Confederation (AHBC) has announced.

The decision was announced at the last meeting of the AHBC Executive Committee, adding that a delegation of inspectors from the governing body of African handball is expected in Angola on 10 -12 March.

ANGOP learnt on Thursday in Luanda that AHBC team will come to the country to examine the conditions of the venue, transport and accommodation of the competing teams.

The event will bring together the first four qualified teams of the African championship held last year (2022) in Dakar, Senegal.

They are Angola, Senegal, Congo and Cameroon.

This is the third time the country host a similar event, after the editions of 2003 for the Athens Olympic Games (Greece) and 2015 of access to the London Olympic Games (England).

Angola are seeking their 8th presence, after Atlanta`1996), Sydney`2000), Athens`2004, Beijing`2008, London` 2012), Rio de Janeiro`2016 and Tokyo`2020. JAD/MC

Carnaval2023: União Recreativo do Kilamba wins Luanda carnival

Luanda – União Recreativo do Kilamba Group from Rangel district, won the class A of Luanda Carnival, edition 2023, whose parade took place on Monday at Nova Marginal Avenue.

The result was announced Wednesday (22), during a ceremony held at the Angolan League of Friendship and Solidarity with the Peoples (LAASP).

In second place came the União Jovens da Cacimba Group with 728 points, while União Kiela ranked third with 720 points, followed by União Njinga Mbandi with 719 points and União Povo da Quissama held the fifth place with 698 points.

The first ranked class A group is entitled to a prize worth AKz 5 million, the second AKz 3 million, the third AKz 2 million, the fourth AKz 1.5 million and AKz 1 million for the fifth place.

Recreativo do Kilamba won the third title, after those achieved in 2018 and 2019. Founded in 2015, is led by Poly Rocha, and has as king Domingos Manuel and Lourdes António, the queen. ART

Petro play BAL in Nile conference

Luanda – Angola’s Petro de Luanda have been included in the Nile conference of the third edition of the African Basketball League (BAL), to be played from April 26 to May 6.

According to the draw held on Monday, the Angolan champions are to play in the Nile conference based in Cairo city, Egypt.

This is the second time in a row that the draw has placed the Angolans in that conference.

Petro de Luanda, runners-up in the competition, will face the hosts Egypt’s Al Haly City Oilers (Uganda), Cape Town Tigers (South Africa), Ferroviário da Beira (Mozambique) and Slac (Guinea).

In the Sahara Conference to take place in Dakar (Senegal) from February 11 to May 21, the teams are Abidjan BC – (Côte d’Ivoire), Kwara Falons – (Nigeria), Stade Malien – (Mali), AS Douanes – (Senegal), REG – (Rwanda) and US Monastir – (Tunisia).

The top four teams from each conference qualify for the final phase.

In the first edition of the competition held in 2021, Petro de Luanda finished third after beating Rwanda’s Patriots 97-68.

In 2022, Petro lost to US Monastir 72-83 in the final.

Interclube and Wiliete vie for third position of championship

Luanda – Interclube, 4th placed with 28 points, and Benguela’s Wiliete in third place with 30 points are battling Sunday for the third position of the national first division football championship.

Separated by two points, the host Interclube will try to “dislodge” their opponent from the third position, in the championship that is now on its 18th round.

Wiliete beat Inter 2-0 at home in the first-leg encounter.

With Desportivo da Lunda Sul (12th with 16 pts)/Petro de Luanda (1st with 35 pts) match postponed, 1.º de Agosto that co-lead the championship with 35 pts were unable to take the lead of the competition after conceding a 1-0 defeat to Santa Rita de Cássia do Uige.

Petro de Luanda drew 0-0 Saturday with Algeria’s JS Kabylie for the first round of group A of the CAF Champions League.

Santa Rita de Cássia do Uíge beat 1º de Agosto

Uíge – Santa Rita de Cássia do Uíge beat 1º de Agosto, 0-1, in a match of the 17th round, which took place Saturday in Uíge Province at the 4 de Fevereiro Stadium and due to that the latter lost the chance to consolidate the championship’s lead.

Before this defeat, 1º de Agosto were sharing the lead of Girabola2022/23 with Petro de Luanda, with 35 points.

Meanwhile, the Petro de Luanda match was postponed due to the team’s involvement in the group stage of the Champions League, where they drew Saturday with Algeria´s JS Kabile in a goalless draw at the 11 Novembro Stadium.

Coached by Filipe Nzanza, 1º de Agosto, who beat FC Bravos do Maquis, 2-1 in the previous round, this Saturday failed to win, conceding the only goal in the 80th minute.

This is Santa Rita de Cássia´s first win against 1.º de Agosto, in nine matches, with a balance of seven defeats and one draw, so the team remain in the sixth place with 26 points.

Santa Rita de Cassia´s assistant coach Ngoma Rafael valued the study done to 1º Agosto before and during the match, which resulted in a difficult but well achieved victory.

Ngoma Rafael promised to work harder to beat Petro de Luanda next week in a match of the 17th round.

On his turn, the head coach of 1.º de Agosto, Filipe Nzanza, recognised the potential of the opponent, who fought well in the match, despite regretting an alleged move that would give a penalty to his team.

Santa Rita, who play next Tuesday, 14, in Luanda, for the conclusion of the 17th round of Girabola, will host Académica do Lobito for the 19th round, while 1.º de Agosto will host Desportivo da Lunda Sul.

Champions League: Algeria’s JS Kabylie train in Luanda

Luanda – Algeria’s JS Kabylie team held training session at 02:00 pm in Angolan lands, ahead of Saturday’s game against Petro de Luanda for group A, of the Champions League of Africa in football.

The Algerians arrived in Luanda, Angola, on Wednesday evening, for a match of group A at Luanda’s “11 de Novembro” Stadium.

The more than 40-member delegation, features directors, athletes, coaches and journalists.

The pre-match press conference is set for Friday (1 pm), at the match venue.

The match will be refereed by an Ethiopian quartet, led by Bamlak Tessama.

This will be the third encounter between the Angolan champions and the Algerians.

The two teams played their first game in April 2010 for Champions League’s group stage qualifying match, and Algeria won 2-0.

In the return match, in Luanda, in May of the same year, Petro de Luanda won 2-1.

Adapted sports project Angola – minister

Luanda – The minister of Youth and Sports, Palmira Barbosa, said Wednesday in Luanda that adapted sports have projected the name of Angola around the world, through the results it has achieved in international competitions.

The minister said the achievements in athletics and the fact that football for amputees has won the World Championship once and two became twice runners up in this competition demonstrate that.

Palmira Barbosa – who was speaking at a sports activity held at Luanda’s Coqueiros stadium, which included the presence of the chief diversity and inclusion officer for the United States Department of State, Gina Abercombie-Winstanley – praised paralympic athletes for being a real strength and a school of life.

The former National Handball Team captain praised the US State Department’s initiative to interact and learn more about adapted sports in the country.

“Gestures like these we are witnessing today become a motivational way for the Paralympic Committee to overcome the challenges that coming ahead”, Ms Barbosa said.

Gina Abercombie-Winstanley, on her turn, said she was touched with the stories of self-improvement she heard from paralympic athletes that are always accompanied by success.

The US official said that diplomacy takes advantage of the passion shared by athletes to encourage inclusion in diverse communities around the world, adding that her department strives to promote diversity, quality, inclusion and accessibility.

Gina Abercombie-Winstanley informed that such programmes also promote the United States’ commitment to empower women and girls, strengthen resilience against extremist influences and develop leadership skills.

The US official added that her country’s sports diplomacy programmes include a variety of sports such as basketball, skateboarding, football, martial arts and sports for disabled in over a hundred countries.

She then revealed that the Government of the United States of America hopes to continue to collaborate with the Angolan government as catalysts for change.

She congratulated the football team for amputees for finishing in second position in the 2022 World Cup held in Turkey, as well as other paralympic athletes.

The event was also attended, besides other national sports leaders, by the US Ambassador to Angola, Tulinabo Mushingi, the president of the Angolan Paralympic Committee, Leonel da Rocha, and officials of the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Afrobasket-2023: Senior female pre-team summoned

Luanda – Eighteen players have joined the national senior female basketball pre-team, ahead of qualifying tournament for Afrobasket-2023, scheduled for 20 -28 February in Zimbabwe.

The main teams of 1.º de Agosto and Interclube provided the greater number of athletes, with seven each, in the list released Thursday by coach Jaime Covilhã.

Point Guards: Italee Lucas, Cácia António, Edvánia Pascoal (Interclube), Rosa Gala and Isabel Fernandes (1º de Agosto) and Armanda Sindalawa (August 1st B).
