Luanda – The Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Manuel Nunes Júnior, said Thursday that the country’s energy matrix already included 62 percent of clean sources, but the “ambition” was to reach 70 percent by 2025.
Nunes Júnior reiterated the government’s efforts to develop clean energy production projects from hydroelectric and photovoltaic dams, with the installation of solar parks underway, as part of commitments made to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Speaking at the opening of the “1st Symposium on Green Hydrogen Angola/Germany,” he said that the development of new sources of clean energy, that is, renewable, more sustainable, which includes “Green Hydrogen,” is aligned with the objectives of the energy transition strategy, which is being carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Energy and Water.
Therefore, he considers that “the Angola-Germany symposium opens opportunities for absorbing scientific knowledge about the production and use of this resource in the context of the energy transition, which in his opinion, will allow the national business class to create new business partnerships with German businesspeople, including the transfer of technologies to boost the country’s industry.
According to the Minister of State, production of Sealed Hydrogen and its derivatives in Angola, via the use of renewable energy, is an alternative that will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which will put the country on a path to carbon neutrality by 2050.
The aim, he said, is to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and gas, as part of the diversification of the sector itself, thus making a tangible start to the energy transition.
Global change with effect on the country
Nunes Júnior admitted that the current global shift from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy would have major economic implications for oil-exporting countries such as Angola.
Without giving details of the implications for Angola, he said that, as well as being rich in hydrocarbons, the country had great potential in renewable energy sources due to its geographical position and privileged climate conditions, for generation of solar, hydroelectric, wind and other types of energy.
