Culture minister wants museums, libraries close to public

Cabinda – Minister of Culture Carolina Cerqueira wants museums, libraries and archives to come closer to the communities by publicising the services and making their collections available to the population.

The minister was speaking Monday at the opening session of the 6th Consultative Council of the sector, held in northern Cabinda province.

She spoke of the need to rehabilitate the existing institutions and building new infrastructure, under the National Development Plan (PDN).

These measures, she said, aim at disseminating the country’s history and anthropological and sociological reality of each region.

Carolina Cerqueira did not rule out the country’s possibility to take part in a continental project to discuss the origins of many of the American citizens, who are of African descent.

This is an anthropological project implemented in other African countries with the use of DNA from a number of people. The move allows us to prove African ancestry, she said.

The project in which Angola must also participate strengthens scientifically the idea of the presence of Angolan blood in the building of the United States of America, “she added.

The minister mentioned the decade of Afro-descendants, proclaimed by the UN with a view to promoting and protecting the rights of some 300 million Afro-descendants spread in the countries outside the African continent, as being under way since 2015.

On the other hand, the official explained that Angola’s participation in the research project on the African descent of North Americans would be a way to welcome the decisive way of the decade of Afro-descendants.

She defended commitment to partnerships with companies and civil society organisations to enhance the culture and arts in order to promote the cultural industries correctly.

Public-private partnerships should be encouraged and reinforce the role of the Angolan diaspora in enhancing culture.

The three-day meeting will also address issues related to heritage and cultural tourism, the municipal system of cultural services and the development of the cultural industry.
