ENVIRONMENT MINISTER REPRESENTS ANGOLA AT CONGO BASIN MEETING

Environment Minister Fatima Jardim is representing Angola at a ministerial meeting of Central African countries in Oto in the Republic of Congo aimed at promoting the signing of a memorandum of co-operation to create the proposed Blue Fund for resource management of the Congo Basin.

According to a media statement issued here, the Blue Fund, which will rely on financial support of 100 million euros a year, will promote a major, better, rational and sustainable management of the Congo Basin while also helping to reduce the effects of global warming on the Congo Basin and to preserve its water resources.

The Fund will also contribute to reducing the problems affecting the riparian populations who mainly depend on hunting, harvesting, fishing, agriculture, as well as harvesting roots and barks to make drugs.

The Blue Fund was launched in November 2016 at the 22nd United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) held in Marrakech, Morocco.
