First Lady highlights education as key factor for development

Luanda – Angolan First Lady Ana Dias Lourenco defended last Monday in New York that education remains the fundamental goal to overcome barriers and improve the life of people of all ages and culture.

Ana Dias Lourenco was speaking at the 2nd meeting of the Group of Women Leaders for Gender Equality, which highlighted the theme “Empowerment of women as a key element for sustainable development”, an initiative of the President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces. The first meeting took place in January of this year.

On this basis, she said that, in the area of women’s empowerment, the Government of Angola’s priority is to improve the quality of the education system, to strengthen the capacity of women, particularly young women, to enable them to participate actively in all aspects of the life of society.

She also said that the perspective of school inclusion, gender equality in access to education for all girls and boys, and the development of programs to eradicate illiteracy as a major factor of human development, also as a means of fighting poverty.

The first lady exemplified the platform, created in March 2018, called “Transform Life, Be a Woman”, as a space aimed at the young woman from various extracts of society, in order to motivate them to assume their role of agent of change and influence in their communities.
