Luanda – Angola national senior women’s handball team face Tunisia Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the African Women’s Handball Championship taking place in Dakar, Senegal, in a repeat of the African Championship held in 2021, in Cameroon.
At the time, the 14-time continental champions (Angola) overcame the three-time champions (Tunisia) by 27-23, in Yaoundé, in the semi-finals.
Previously, in 2014, Angola won in the regular round, 25-19, but fell to the same opponent, 31-30, in a challenge that kept the national team away from the title.
In 2016, in Luanda, Angola beat Tunisia in the final by an expressive 36-17.
In regard to Wednesday’s match for the quarterfinals of the 25th edition of the handball championship, Angola are favourites to win the game taking into account the number of titles, podium appearances and strong squad.
The quarter-finals also include the matches between Cameroon-DRC, Senegal-Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire-Congo.
For Dakar, 18 players were called up, namely, Teresa Almeida, Helena de Sousa, Marta Alberto (goalkeepers), Liliane Mário, Estefânia Venâncio, Liliana Venâncio (pivots), Helena Paulo, Isabel Guialo, Marília Quizelete (central players).
Completing the squad are Dolores Rosário, Natália Fonseca (right wingers), Natália dos Santos, Marcela Tati (left wingers), Wuta Dombaxe, Juliana Machado, Suzete Matias (right wingers), Stélvia Pascoal, Magda Cazanga (left wingers).
