Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has warned politicians from Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties against inciting residents over land issues, especially at the border points of the two Counties.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service at St Joseph Benedict Cottolengo Catholic Church in Mwanganthia ward, Imenti Central, Meru County to commemorate the Parish’s Patron Saint feast and family day, Prof Kindiki said there was no big issue about the boundary but politicians were bloating it for their political interests.
The CS threatened to take lawful action against those who will be found inciting the residents regardless of their status.
‘I want to state clearly without any fear of contradiction that I will ensure that those who will incite their people against their neighbours will be arrested and legal action taken against them,’ said Prof Kindiki.
He added: ‘We are brothers and I want to assure you that the problems facing us for all those years are getting to an end soon.’
The CS said he has been in politics and was aware of what some politicians were doing to appear to support their people.
‘I have been in politics but never sat with anyone down to incite them against their neighbours. Those who are doing this are criminals like any other and should be treated just like other criminals whether they are my friends or not,’ said Prof Kindiki.
The CS said it was a shame that he was handling serious security matters in other parts of the country and back at home, some people were inciting others to fight for simple things that could be resolved amicably.
‘It’s a matter of a few days before we end the small problems concerning lands near the boundary. We are calling on the residents to be patient for a while as we find a lasting solution to the issue,’ said Professor Kindiki.
Concerns about the boundary issue were raised by a number of Meru MCAs led by majority leader Evans Mawira who also attended the service.
A week ago, the CS directed the County Commissioners from the two counties to hold an urgent meeting under the supervision of the regional commissioner to come up with a program on how the disputes will be dealt with.
