MPLA leader introduces candidate for Vice-President of Angola in Zaire

Luanda – MPLA President João Lourenço presented Saturday in Zaire province the party’s candidate for Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança Costa.

This is the first public appearance of the MPLA’s chosen Vice-President of the Republic, ahead of the general elections, scheduled for 24 August this year.

The party leader appealed to the vote for the continuation of the actions in favour of the country’s development.

João Lourenço stressed that the ruling MPLA party has always made a serious commitment to women and young people and that it continues to work to achieve parity, already achieved at the level of its Central Committee.

Candidate profile

Esperança Maria Eduardo Francisco da Costa has a PhD in Phytoecology from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. She has a Master’s degree in Plant Productivity, Higher Institute of Agronomy in Lisbon.

From 2020 to the present, she holds the position of Secretary of State for Fisheries.

Between 2010 and 2020 she was director of the Botany Center at Agostinho Neto University (UAN), while in 2007-2010 period she was the National Director of the Expansion of Higher Education at the Ministry of Higher Education.

Her curriculum also includes the position of Vice-Rector for the University Expansion of UAN (2002 – 2007), founder of the UAN Botany Center. From 1997–2002 she was Deputy Director of Scientific Affairs at UAN.

She is also listed as National Coordinator of the SADC Biodiversity Studies Network (SABONET), Focal Point for Southern Africa of the International Science Network, IFS, among other positions.

A member of the MPLA Central Committee since 2019, Esperança Costa has worked in the various party structures, such as women and youth organizations, OMA and JMPLA respectively.
