National Assembly Speaker highlights pope’s values

Luanda – National Assembly Speaker Carolina Cerqueira praised Wednesday the figure of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, whom she described as a serene person with an unbreakable verticality to his principles.

Paying tribute to Pope Benedict XVI at the Apostolic Nunciature, the Speaker considered him one of the most outstanding theologians of all time and marked an important era in his transition as leader of the Catholic Church.

“Joseph Retzinger was one of the most illustrious figures of the Catholic Church, with recognised intellectuality, wisdom and serenity and of an unbreakable verticality to the principles and values he always defended”, wrote Carolina Cerqueira.

Carolina Cerqueira recalled when Benedict XVI visited the country in 2009.

According to her, the Pope Benedict left his mark in Angola as an evidence of appreciation and friendship to the Catholic communities and in the wishes of preserving peace, building a socially fair and economically developed society, having a strong and rich country that makes all Angolans proud.

Benedict XVI, 95, died on December 31, 2022.

He stepped down in 2013, becoming the first to do so in six centuries.
