South Africa: Angolan president arrives in Johannesburg

Johannesburg – Angolan head of State JoAPound o Lourenco arrived early Thursday in South Africa to attend the 10th BRICS Summit running until 27th July in Sandton, outskirts of Johannesburg.

JoAPound o Lourenco is one of the two representatives from the Portuguese Speaking African Countries invited to the event, in addition to Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi.

Upon his arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base, the Statesman was welcomed by Luwelly Tyrone Landers, deputy minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa.

This is the first time the Angolan president is attending the forum of the five countries with the main emerging economies of the World (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) since he was elected in 2017.

This is the second time Angola is participating in the event, after the 5th BRICS Summit held in Durban in 2013, where the country was represented by the former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who left the office in 2017.

On Friday – the last day of the Summit- Angolan president will also attend with the countries of BRICS Outreach Africa a Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of BRICS.

Angop learned in Johannesburg that JoAPound o Lourenco is likely to meet with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday and another meeting with the Premier of India, Narendra Modi.
