SOUTH AFRICAN OPPOSITION PARTY DA TO CONTEST ALL AVAILABLE MUNICIPAL WARDS
South Africa’s leading opposition political party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has announced that it will contest all available municipal wards throughout the country in the August 3 local government elections.
This will include all executive mayoral positions in the country’s major cities, the DA announced Thursday in Cape Town, ahead of the deadline for the submission of party lists to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
DA leader Mmusi Maimane said the party had announced its executive mayoral candidates, and has challenged the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party to do the same.
“I want to say to Gwede Mantashe (the ANC Secretary-General) and to (President) Jacob Zuma, ‘Release your lists, release your mayoral candidates’ so that we can see, so that South Africans know who they are voting for, don’t mislead the people of this country,” added Maimane.
“Let us all be clear of what we are going into, we have already told you who our people are, you can interrogate them as you have, but the ANC cannot play hide and seek with their candidates.”
