SPORTS MINISTRY EXPRESSES REGRET AT DEATH OF FIVE FANS IN ANGOLA STADIUM STAMPEDE

LUANDA– Angola’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed regret at the death of five football fans during a a stampede at Luanda’s 11 de Novembro Stadium during an African Champions League match on Saturday between hosts Primeiro de Agosto and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) club, TP Mazembe.

The quarter-final match in Africa’s premier competition for club football ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Sports Ministry said Sunday that among those killed were three members of the same family, two of them children aged 10 and 12.

“The deadly stampede happened when the crowd tried to leave the stadium (after the match ended),” the ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry expressed its regret over the incident and conveyed its condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

It said a commission of inquiry will be set up to investigate the causes of the incident.
