USD 12 million spent on rice import

Luanda – Angola spent USD 12 million on rice imports between January and June this year, the Secretary of State for Economy of the Ministry of Economy and Planning Sergio Santos, has told Angop.

Sergio Santos said that during this period the Government made available USD 2 million to purchase four thousand tons of this cereal/month.

“If on an average we are spending two million dollars a month, in six months we spend 12 million to import four thousand tons of rice/month,” he said.

As for the low production and processing of this cereal in the country, Santos is of the view to give priority to the purchase of local production rather than focusing on import.

With existing of some rice production in the country, Sergio Santos spoke of the need to acquire a husking machine.
