39 Million People Relied on GFN Member Food Banks for Meals in 2021

In the face of further economic turmoil and supply chain disruptions, food banks once again played a pivotal role in providing emergency food assistance—at a level 128 percent higher than before the pandemic.

Chicago, IL, USA, June 06, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) announced that food banks in 44 countries served 39 million people in 2021, demonstrating that need for food assistance is continuing at high levels in the face of rising food prices and disrupted supply chains.

The data is part of GFN’s annual Network survey, and this year’s responses emphasize the importance of a strong network of food banks in times of crisis.

“Communities around the world are facing hunger at unprecedented rates,” said Lisa Moon, president and CEO of The Global FoodBanking Network. “Consistently, food banks are stepping up and using their unique expertise to connect millions of people to nutritious food.”

The 39 million people who sought emergency food assistance is a 128 percent increase over 2019 pre-COVID levels of service. Additionally, about 54 percent of people were served regularly for more than three months during 2021 while 44 percent of people served visited food banks occasionally, temporarily, or for the first time due to a shift in economic circumstances.

More than three-fourths of people served by GFN member food banks live in emerging and developing market economies. Most of the people who visited GFN member food banks in 2021—about 24 million—live in Asia and Oceania. Another 8.8 million food bank visitors are from Latin America. Children ages 17 and under comprised more than a third of the total people served.

Food banks, on average, distributed 57 percent more food and grocery products than the previous year, despite sourcing challenges brought on by breakdowns in supply chains and other factors. The most commonly distributed products are fruits and vegetables—constituting 30 percent of what an average food bank provides.

While need for hunger relief has been unprecedented, so has the generosity and determination of people partnering within the Network. Nearly 317,000 people volunteered with GFN partner food banks, a 14 percent increase over 2020, providing more than 8 million hours of support.

2022 is already proving to be another challenging year for people facing hunger and food insecurity, with the Ukraine invasion compounding the continuing effects of the pandemic and leading to further rises in food prices. But food banks will continue to respond quickly and efficiently in the face of crises, leaning on the experiences of the past few years.

“Unfortunately, we are likely on the precipice of a global hunger crisis,” said Moon. “Food banks will be central to the response. The lessons learned during the pandemic have strengthened the Network, better equipping us to provide ongoing services to children, individuals, and families in vulnerable situations.”

About The Global FoodBanking Network:

The Global FoodBanking Network supports community-led solutions to alleviate hunger in more than 40 countries. While millions struggle to access enough safe and nutritious food, nearly a third of all food produced is lost or wasted. We’re changing that. We believe food banks directed by local leaders are key to achieving Zero Hunger and building resilient food systems. For more information, visit foodbanking.org.

President receives African MMA championship medal winners

Luanda – The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, received on Monday the athletes of the national Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) team, winners of 13 medals at the African championship.

In the competition, held in April, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Angolan team was in the second position of the medals table, having won four (4) gold, two (2) silver and seven (7) bronze.

Addressing some words of appreciation, President João Lourenço congratulated, on behalf of himself, the Government and the Angolan people, the athletes and the technical team for their achievements in the African championship of the sport, in which South Africa came in first position.

“We are very proud of your achievement and we are sure that in the World Cup you will fight to get a prominent place,” the Head of State said on the occasion.

With the second place, Angola, qualified for the World championship to be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, next November, for whose participation the Head of State promised the athletes all the necessary support.

“You can count on all our support in what is possible, as long as you send us the necessary information so that we can prepare even better and represent, with dignity, the good name of Angola in the world championship”, he said.

During the ceremony, witnessed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ana Paula do Sacramento, it was delivered to the President of the Republic a gold medal, offered by the organization of the event, in recognition of the good performance of the national team.

Constitutional Court advises against multiple candidacies

Luanda – The Constitutional Court has appealed to political parties preparing to participate in the 2022 polls, set for August 24, to be ware of multiple candidacies, for such cases will be rejected.

The warning comes on a note issued by the court, which ANGOP checked on Monday, which also gives practical instructions on how political parties ought to present their respective candidacies for the upcoming polls.

Citing the Constitution and the Electoral Law, the Constitutional Court reminds that the political parties are limited to only one candidacy, and also underlines that no citizen must be part of more than one list of candidates.

The non observance of such precepts will imply the cancellation of the candidacies for President of the Republic, Vice President of the Republic, and the list of candidates for members of the National Assembly (Angolan parliament).

However, the court explains that the political parties or coalitions may include in their lists citizens that are not members or militants of their organisations, as long as their respective statutes allow.

The candidacies are to be submitted until the twentieth day after the calling of the elections, that is, counting from June 03, the day in which President João Lourenço announced the Poll Day following a Council of the Republic meeting.

According to the rules the candidates for President of the Republic and Vice President come first and second respectively on the list of candidates. In their processes the court must find documents and information like copy of the I.D, age, profession and home address.

Angolans are going to the ballot this year, for the fifth time since the first multi-party elections held in 1992.

Angola to start civic voter education campaign Thursday

Luanda – Angola has announced plans to launch a nationwide civic voter education campaign from Thursday (9), ahead of the 2022 general elections due on August 24.

The announcement was made by the spokesperson of the National Election Commission (CNE), Lucas Kilundo, on Monday in Luanda.

Kilundo was speaking at the end of the fifth extraordinary plenary session of the CNE, which discussed and approved the working instruments as part of the electoral civic education campaign in all phases of the process.

The CNE ‘s spokesperson added that among the instruments to be used stress goes to the practical guide for the electoral civic education agent, aimed to clarify doubts of the voters and provide information related to the electoral process, and a comic strip for mass dissemination and access to all citizens regardless of their age.

Kilungo said the CNE has structured the campaign to address, in the first phase, general aspects about elections, democracy, citizenship and the need to vote.

In the second phase, the campaign will focus on information about the location of polling stations, encouraging voters to locate places to vote, while the third phase will focus on communication regarding the right way to cast ballots.

He pointed out that the phases will be implemented gradually, as the schedule of tasks is developed.

At least 6,020 electoral civic education agents will be mobilised nationwide for the campaign that will count on the support of the mass media outlets, with emphasis on social networks and the National Electoral Commission’s website www.cne.ao.

The general elections, the fifth of the kind in Angola is due on August 24, all over the country and abroad.

The elections were officially announced by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, on June 3 under the terms of the Constitution and the electoral law in force.

Constitutional Court introduces new method for submitting applications

Luanda – The delivery of the candidacies of political parties and coalition of parties running in the general elections of 24 August, to the Constitutional Court (CC), will be made by scheduling, to confer greater dignity, comfort and convenience to those involved.

According to the Director of the Constitutional Court’s Political Parties Office, Mauro Alexandre Quitumbo, a Digital Platform for Scheduling was created for this reason.

Mr. Quitumbo explained that the recipients have the possibility of choosing the day and time they want to deliver the candidacy processes, avoiding constraints such as having more than one political formation at the same time. For this, he said, the platform’s credentials were given beforehand to the party representatives, who will be able to use them in an easier way.

In this sense, without revealing the name of the political party, he made it known that the first appointment has already been made for next Wednesday (8).

He also said that this innovation will give dynamism to the process of reception, justification and validation of the candidates.

The period for presentation of applications, which began today, will run until June 25.

The second phase (10 days after the first) will be reserved for correcting any irregularities or shortcomings in the files submitted.

Thirteen political parties (eight parties and one coalition of political parties) are eligible to run in the general elections on 24 August.

The Constitutional Court has, among other competencies, the task of verifying and validating the candidacies for the elections.

Angola vows to do away with child labour

Luanda – Angolan minister of Public Administration, Labor and Social Security Teresa Rodrigues said Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, that the country has, in recent years, made “moderate progress” in its strategy to eliminate child labour.

The minister was speaking at the 110th International Labour Conference, held in-person and online until 11 June.

She said that in its fight against this phenomenon, the country has launched several initiatives, including the National Action Plan for Eradication of Child Labour in Angola (PANETI).

This is an Executive programme that contains integrated measures to be implemented until 2025, aimed to guide the work of agents in the practical application of children’s rights.

According to the minister, all this work was legally supported by Presidential Decree No. 239/21, of 29 September – PANETI, and, at the same time, Presidential Decree No. 168/21, of 14 October which creates the Multi-sector Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labour.

Data from the National Children’s Institute (INAC) put at 573 the number of child labour victims in the country, between January and May 2021, with most involved in the exploitation of aggregates and farms.

Teresa Rodrigues also recalled that the Executive proposed an increase of around 50% in the national minimum wage in the different economic groups, such as agriculture, transport and services, and manufacturing industry.

The intention is to increase the purchasing power of workers in the private sector.

As for mandatory social security, the official explained the sector has faced several challenges linked to the fundamental axis of the National Development Programme 2018-2022.

In order to deal with this challenges, more benefits and regimes have been created, such as the Legal Regime for Sportsmen, the Regime for Insured Persons with Suspended Bonds, as well as Incentive and Support Measures for the Economy.

Shanghai Residents Chafe Under Fresh COVID Lockdowns

Residents stuck inside a compound nearly a week after Shanghai’s much vaunted reopening following a virus outbreak shouted at hazmat-clad officials on Monday, as fears grew that some city neighborhoods were being locked down again.

Authorities in the financial hub eased many harsh restrictions last Wednesday, after confining most of the city’s 25 million inhabitants to their homes since late March, as China battled its worst COVID outbreak in two years.

But hundreds of thousands have not yet been allowed out of their homes, while others have immediately been placed back under local lockdowns after a brief liberation that triggered shopping sprees and booze-fueled street parties.

In downtown Xuhui district on Monday, an AFP reporter witnessed about a dozen people in one fenced-off housing compound shouting angrily at hazmat-clad officials.

From behind rows of fences, crowds chanted “Serve the people!” at officials standing on the other side.

One resident, who gave the surname Li, said tempers had flared after the community was suddenly put back into lockdown on Saturday.

“I’m very indignant,” he told AFP. “It’s been two months and we can’t cope anymore. We’re all negative [on COVID tests], why lock us in a cage?”

A local media outlet said in a swiftly deleted social media post that residents of the compound were angry at the threat of being sent to state-run quarantine facilities despite being designated “low-risk.”

Li said virus-negative people were being transferred to quarantine hotels every day, sometimes in the middle of the night.

“It’s had a huge impact on everyone’s lives,” he said. “Our mood is very bleak.”

Some restrictions lifted

Shanghai has creaked back to life in recent days, as commuters have begun to return to their offices and residents have gathered in parks and along the city’s historic waterfront.

But authorities have said over half a million people remain under movement curbs in the city.

Under China’s stringent zero-COVID approach, all positive cases are isolated and close contacts — often including the entire building or community where they live — are made to quarantine.

People from the financial hub still face lengthy quarantines or outright bans on entering other parts of the country.

A phased, voluntary reopening of the city’s schools began on Monday, with around 250 schools open and children in the final two years of high school the first allowed to return.

Malls, convenience stores, pharmacies and beauty salons are only allowed to open at limited capacity, while cinemas and gyms remain closed.

Taxi services and private cars are allowed in “low-risk” areas only.

Shanghai and the capital Beijing — which has also been trying to stamp out a cluster of cases — both posted single-digit numbers of infections on Monday.

Beijing eased a ban on indoor dining as more employees returned to their offices after weeks of working from home.
