Laikipia Butcheries On The Spot Over Sale Of Uninspected Meat

Authorities in Laikipia County have launched an investigation into sale of uninspected meat in local trading centres following public outcry over theft of sheep and goats in farms.

Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said unscrupulous traders were taking advantage of the cheaply available stolen livestock to make huge profit margin without regard of public health guidelines.

‘It is believed that those who steal livestock, slaughter and stock in local butcheries without subjecting the product for mandatory inspection, thereby exposing members of the public to the risk of contracting diseases. This must stop,’ warned Kanyiri.

He noted that those found with unstamped meat in their butcheries, will be charged in a court of law.

‘We will be inspecting slaughter houses to ascertain the stamp from the meat inspectors. If not stamped, the seller will have a case to answer,’ said Kanyiri.

The incident comes after irate residents from Matanya village, Laikipia central sub county over the weekend, set ablaze a Toyota Probox suspected to have been involved in the transportation of the missing livestock.

During the incident, Commissioner Kanyiri told KNA that the suspects reportedly threw the stolen livestock through the windows of their vehicle while escaping the wrath of the angry mob who were baying for their blood. However, administrator cautioned residents against taking law into their own hands and let the police handle the matter.

The County Commissioner said that 45 sheep belonging to Martha Gathinji from Marura sub-location were also stolen on the wee hours of Sunday morning and after the police search, eight lambs were recovered at Mountex along Nanyuki River.

This comes barely two weeks after a Nanyuki-based butchery owner was arrested after 43 suspected stolen sheep were found at his homestead at Ruai village on the outskirts of Nanyuki town.

Kanyiri said a racket involving theft of livestock and sale of uninspected meat within Nanyuki town has been going on for a while.

He further warned against transportation of livestock at night in Laikipia County.

Ways to boost cooperation between Tunisia and WB in coming period, discussed

The financial and technical cooperation and the joint will to further boost it in the coming period, especially in social protection, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) development and renewable energy fields, were at heart of a meeting between Economy and Planning Minister Samir Saied and World Bank (WB) Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa Ferid Belhaj, held on the sidelines of the 2023 Spring Meetings of the WB Group and International Monetary Fund (April 10-16 in Washington).

The two officials also discussed ways to build capacity to address climate change and achieve food security, and ways to further consolidate and widen cooperation in the social protection field to include the economic empowerment programme launched by the government several years ago.

Emphasis was laid in this regard, on the programme’s effectiveness in helping to provide adequate mechanisms for the benefit of needy categories who have no source of income, in order to improve their living conditions and purchasing power, by helping them set up small projects.

In addition to other scheduled programmes, this programme is in line with the government’s policy to ensure a balance between economic growth and social stability, particularly with regard to the revision of the subsidy system, Saied said.

As far as boosting SMEs is concerned, the minister commended the support of the World Bank, which had recently approved a US$120 million loan under the the Support to Small and Medium Enterprises for Economic Recovery Project, to be disbursed as soon as possible.

The two sides pointed out the need to speed up all the technical and financial stages of the electricity interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy “ELMED.”

They also discussed the projects to be carried out in the renewable energy field and how to improve STEG’s strategy to develop the electricity transmission network.

The possibility that the WB will provide a financial and technical support to deepen the strategic study in progress, in order to identify practical solutions to tackle the water deficit and reinforce food security, including the development of a strategy for saving and rationalising water use, the establishment of a programme to combat water leaks and improve the maintenance of drinking water networks, the use of modern irrigation techniques, the exploitation of treated water in agricultural production, notably for fodder, sea water desalination and brackish water treatment and others projects, were also touched upon during this meeting.

The talk further turned on the measures taken to unblock some WB-funded projects, including the adoption of Law No. 68 to improve the efficiency of the implementation of public and private projects and the recent adoption by a cabinet meeting of 185 measures to improve the business and investment climate, in consultation with the private sector.

Saied and Belhaj affirmed joint willingness to develop bilateral cooperation under the country partnership strategy, which will be submitted to the WB Board of Directors in mid-June.

“Eurobonds” issue portfolio represents 19% of the debt stock

Angola’s portfolio of issues on the London stock market of international bonds, in the form of “Eurobonds”, today represents around 19% of the debt stock, the Ministry of Finance has said.

Eurobonds are all securities issued in a market whose security currency is different from the issuing market currency, in this case the Kwanza.

The data were released by the Minister of Finance, Vera Daves, to the investors in the international financial market with present or future interest in Angolan bonds.

The ceremony took place during a roadshow held last week in Washington, USA, as part of the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which ended on Sunday, April 16th.

The meeting was attended by around 60 representatives of various entities operating in the international financial market.

The Angolan minister of Finance, Vera Daves, addressed the main macroeconomic indicators and ongoing measures for public debt management, according to a note from the sector reached ANGOP on Monday (17).

“These are numbers that investors usually like to follow and hear firsthand from the portfolio holders”, said Vera Daves, stressing that verbal information is always better than just reading reports and statistics.

The 2023 General State Budget forecasts a public debt of around 45%.

At this event, Angola presented fiscal, monetary, exchange rate and real economy policies to investors in the international financial market with a present or future interest in Angolan securities.

The Angolan delegation, still within the framework of the meetings in Washington, held a meeting on Friday, 14th, with the Vice-president of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Sérgio Pimenta, and senior staff of the institution.

During the meeting, Angola asked for greater commitment from the IFC in financing projects and initiatives from the private sector.

According to the available data, currently the pipeline of projects includes some components of technical assistance and consultancy, as well as short and long term financing, involving local banks such as BNI, BFA, BMA, among others.

In terms of infrastructure, such as transport and telecommunications, there are possibilities for IFC to get involved in supporting, in technical terms, the structuring of public-private partnerships (PPP).

IFC’s Vice President, Sérgio Pimenta, recognised the existing operational difficulties, ensuring greater involvement of the organisation in the opportunities that arise.

During the meeting, priorities were aligned with a focus on supporting the private sector, such as grain production, livestock, fisheries and the structuring of PPPs, with emphasis on the transport, energy and water sectors.

The IFC-International Finance Corporation- is the World Bank Group wing dedicated to supporting the private sector and has been operating in Angola since 2019.
