Farmers To Get Training On Crop Diversification

Over 50, 000 Tea and Coffee farmers from Embu and Kirinyaga counties are set to be trained on crop diversification by Non-Governmental Organization, Rainforest Alliance to increase revenue streams as well as conserve climate.

The program dubbed, Mt. Kenya Sustainable Landscape and Livelihoods Program, earmarked to run for five years is aimed at training farmers on how to diversify to other high value crops such as macadamia, grafted avocado, dairy and goat farming, beekeeping and rearing small livestock including rabbits among others.

The development comes at a time when earnings from the two cash crops that have for long been the main source of income for farmers are on a downward trend due to climate change, hence reduced and erratic rainfall leading to poor production.

Speaking at an Embu Hotel Monday, during a meeting with Tea Factory Chairmen from the two counties to bring them up to speed with the new development, an Official from the NGO, Julius Ng’ang’a, said the two crops could no longer meet and sustain the financial needs of farmers’ due climate change, high cost of production and price volatility.

This, he said, called for a change in tact to help farmers reduce the financial risks associated with reliance on a few crops, as a result of unfavorable weather or market shocks.

‘Growing a wide range of crops will greatly help in expanding the market potential,’ said Ng’ang’a, noting that they will also be assisting in linking farmers to markets locally and internationally.

The NGO official said in the near future, they plan to extend the program to other coffee growing counties around Mt. Kenya Region including Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri, Murang’a and Laikipia.

Factory chairmen present hailed the initiative as transformative, which would go a long way in making farming a lucrative venture and also make it attractive to the young people.

‘Tea alone is having a big load on farmers and diversification is a welcome move in assisting our growers improve their livelihoods,’ said Rukuriri Tea Factory (Embu) Chairman Joseph Rwanjau.

His Thumaita Factory (Kirinyaga) counterpart Richard Magu equally called on farmers to embrace and uphold the new concept that will see them not only acquire requisite knowledge and skills, but also seed capital.

Machakos Public Hospitals To Charge Consultation Fee

Patients seeking treatment in public health facilities in Machakos will now be required to pay consultation fees in a new directive that the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Dr. Daniel Yumbya has said is meant to supplement the county government’s efforts in provision of Universal Health Cover (UHC).

Dr. Yumbya said the directive takes effect immediately for level five and four hospitals that will be charging Sh150 and Sh100 respectively.

‘The charges for level three is Sh50 and will be effected on May 1, we are however leaving out level two facilities for now,’ he said.

While defending the move, the CECM said the county government has been paying huge amounts of money for drugs and other essential medical supplies and the payments will go a long way in supplementing the expenditure.

‘The county government pays between Sh30-40 million to KEMSA for drug supplies every month. We are also clearing a debt of around Sh200 million inherited from previous administration,’ said Dr. Yumbya.

He disclosed that the crisis of drug supplies was occasioned after the national government stopped funding the county government after it was picked as one of the pilot devolved units for the UHC.

‘Machakos was picked for the pilot programme and the national government in 2018 and 2019 disbursed Sh1 billion each year, however the funding stopped at the advent of corona outbreak in 2020,’ added the CECM.

Speaking to the press outside Machakos Level Five Hospital the CECM reiterated the county government’s commitment in provision of affordable health care and asked residents not to politicize the payments.

‘Counties like Nakuru have been charging these payments for all their facilities. It should not be politicized,’ said Dr. Yumbya.

He however said patients who do not reside in Machakos County will pay more for the consultation and the county government will issue special cards to Machakos residents for the payments.

‘The payments will be done cashless. However, the charges mentioned only apply for Machakos residents,’ said the CECM.

Dr. Yumbya also urged residents to take up the NHIF cover in large numbers to cover for their medical expenses.

Over 900 Residents Benefit From Free Eye Check-Up

More than 900 residents of Likuyani Constituency in Kakamega County have benefited from a free eye clinic sponsored by Innocent Mugabe Foundation and the Sabatia Eye Hospital.

The free consultation and checkup at Likuyani Primary School saw hundreds of residents screened for eye-related disorders and those with extreme cases referred to Sabatia Eye Hospital for surgery.

Speaking during the event, Likuyani Member of Parliament Innocent Mugabe said the free medical camp targeted poor residents with eye problems, who are unable to travel to distant hospitals for check-up or fear the cost implications.

Mugabe urged the national and county governments to invest more in visual health as the number of those with eye disorders keeps on increasing globally.

He said: ‘The large number of people that has turned up for the free eye check-up is a clear indication that eye related ailments are on the increase not only in Likuyani but countrywide.

‘Henceforth both the national and county governments need to enhance provision of visual health.

‘Most of the people who came up for check-up are not aware of what is affecting them, because only a few health facilities offer eye check-up and treatment services.

‘My appeal therefore is that the two levels of government need to invest more on visual health so that when an individual has an eye problem he/ she can be attended to immediately before the problem becomes incurable.’

The lawmaker said most children especially those in school are becoming victims of eye disorders and if the problem is not checked early enough, the number of the visually impaired will continue increasing amidst us.

‘We must appreciate Sabatia Eye Hospital for accepting to participate in the free medical camp and attending to residents. We want these services to be offered in our local health facilities so that residents don’t have to wait for medical camps to be treated,’ Mugabe

said.

Residents who benefited from the free check-up lauded the MP for the initiative saying most of them especially the aged ones are suffering in silence.

Grace Nafula, a beneficiary of the free check-up said she has had eye aches for a long time without receiving treatment.

‘We appreciate our MP. I have never gone to hospital for check-up due to lack of money. However, today we have been screened together with my 12 year old child and drugs prescribed to us,’ she said.

Another beneficiary, Alfayo Imbukwa also said it was worthwhile bringing the clinic closer to them.

‘We are extremely happy. Some of us have received eyeglasses; others have been given drugs, while those with serious cases have been referred to Sabatia for operation,’ he stated.

Jane Osango a medic with Sabatia Eye Hospital discouraged the public from using any kind of drug to treat their eye ailments without a specialist’s prescription.

She said eye disorders vary from one individual to another, hence there are individuals who can be cured by medicine depending on the disease, and others can be assisted by eyeglasses, while others require rehabilitation through an operation.

‘We have a variety of eye diseases. Let us stop borrowing drugs from friends or relatives anytime we have eye problems, but rather visit specialists.

‘It is not medically safe to use someone else’s medicine because it cured him or her when they had a related sickness. You might use the drug and end up destroying your eyes to the extent of becoming blind.

There are also instances where we go to chemists to purchase prescribed eye drugs, but when we reach there we are told we don’t have that drug but there is an alternative one. This is also very dangerous to your visual health. The best option therefore is to visit a specialist,’ she said.

Osango attributed most eye problems especially in children to allergy.

She said allergy is caused by many issues including cold, smoke, dust while other persons experience it during crop pollination noting that if not properly managed it can lead to blindness.

Likuyani Ward Representative Brian Mafunga expressed worry that poverty is preventing most people from going for medical check-ups.

‘We have a lot of poverty especially in the rural areas. Every time one wishes to go for check-up they get discouraged by the high costs involved. However, my appeal to residents is that they should register with NHIF which will enable them handle some of the health challenges,’ he advised.

Balikumbat girl found in Douala 8 years after father claimed she was killed

Wasum Augustine, former Mayor of the Balikumbat council in Ngoketunjia division in the North West region is relieved after a girl he was accused of killing was found alive in Douala.

Iyeh Precious, daughter of Nwanyek Philip was recently found in the economic capital, Douala hawking, we learned. This is coming years after the former Mayor was jailed by the hitherto missing girl’s father for allegedly kidnapping and killing his daughter.

CNA gathered from sources close to the family that this was a ploy to get Mayor Wasum Augustine off his seat.

The said girl disappeared in June 2015 and has not been seen for the past years. Her father was a councillor at the Balikumbat council and also a friend to the Mayor, we learned. The matter was brought before the Ndop high court in 2016 and Wasum Augustine served a pre-trial detention for more than two years at the Ndop prison.

In December 2018, the accused was released on basis that there were no evidence to support that he committed the act. The girl’s father later on filed an appeal against the court’s decision and it was later on overruled by the North West court of appeal and the accused was arrested once again in 2022 and detained at the Bamenda central prison.

We gathered that the case may see another twist as the girl has been identified and detained by security forces in Douala. Another source revealed that for the past years, the girl’s name has been changed just for her father to win the case against the former Mayor.

Cameroon: over 3 million malaria cases detected last year

Over 3 million cases of malaria were recorded in Cameroon in 2022 alone.

The figures were revealed by the National Program for the Fight Against Malaria (PNLP) in Cameroon on the occasion of the 16th World Malaria Day observed on April 25th 2023. The day is being observed annually to bring global attention to the efforts being made to bring an end to malaria and encourage action to reduce suffering and death from the disease.

World Malaria Day this year is celebrated under the theme “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement”. Within this theme, WHO will focus on the third “I” – implement – and notably on the critical importance of reaching marginalized populations with the tools and strategies that are available today.

Malaria remains one of the diseases that affects many people in the West region and in Cameroon as a whole as statistics show that 30% of consultations in health facilities are malaria – related cases.

According to Dr Claude Belanquale, Head of the Bangang Medical Center in the Bamboutos, malaria is caused by parasites.

“Malaria is a disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes and presents with fever, joint pain, headache, lack of appetite, and vomiting as signs and symptoms.”

“The severity of malaria varies based on the species of plasmodium and can generally be avoided by preventing the transmission of the plasmodium parasite by sleeping under long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets as recommended by the World Health Organization. A mosquito repellent can also be used to prevent mosquito bites. In addition, surroundings should be kept very clean and pregnant women can take prophylactic treatment to prevent possible infection,” Dr Belanquale adds.

In terms of treatment, Dr Belanquale says the disease can be treated.

“Malaria can be treated based on its severity. Simple malaria can be treated using Artemisin-based combined therapy or amodiaquine, sulphadoxine, or quinine tablets. Severe malaria can be managed using injectable treatments.”

Cameroon is among the 10 African countries with the highest malaria cases but diagnosis and treatment remain poor. Since 2017, the armed conflict in the North West and South West regions has led to the displacement of over 700,000 people and the closure of over 35 percent of health facilities. As a result, many internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been unable to access essential health services, including malaria prevention and treatment.

Public health boss reiterates government commitment to eradicate malaria

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachi, has reiterated the commitment of the Cameroon government to eradicate malaria in Cameroon.

He was speaking this April 25th during a workshop organized in Yaounde on the occasion of the commemoration of the 16th edition of world malaria day celebrated this year under the theme: “Time to deliver zero malaria, invest, innovate, implement”.

“This April 25th the whole world is organizing a setup advocacy in favor of the fight against malaria. Cameroon which is not left behind has joined the international community for this advocacy in taking stock of the enforcement over the past 12 months. This is also the opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the Cameroon government and its partner to eradicate this disease,” Dr Manaouda stated.

The US Ambassador to Cameroon, Christopher John Lamora declared that the US government has invested billions in the fight against the disease.

“Through the President’s Malaria Initiative, PMI, the US government has invested more than 80 billion FCFA in Cameroon since 2017. This investment has helped to reduce overall child mortality by more than 35 %.

“Between 2017 and 2022, PMI in collaboration with Cameroon’s malaria control program, has provided seasonal malaria chemoprevention treatment to close to 2 million children annually and supported more than 75,000 capacity building trainings for Cameroonian health workers. Last year, the government delivered more than 5,000 insecticides treated mosquito nets, 9 million doses of seasonal malaria chemoprevention treatment, and 2 million rapid diagnoses tests in the North and Far North regions.”

The Ambassador further explained that the US government has been involved in the global fight against malaria from the 1950s till date.

Various stakeholders have therefore reflected on the progress made so far in eradicating the disease as well as highlighted the need for continuous investment and sustained political, economic and social commitment to prevent and get rid of malaria.
