FKE Urges Training Institutions To Tailor Their Programmes To Bridge The Skills Gap

Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE) together with its partners have launched skills needs survey report which will be beneficial to employers, employees and even graduates from colleges and universities.

Speaking at the event, FKE Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jacqueline Mugo stated that the survey is important towards informing the skills development agenda in the country.

While emphasizing that FKE has policies, practices and programmes that need information, she noted that it is still the responsibility of the federation to contribute towards having information to inform that agenda.

‘To discuss the issue of skills at the international labour organization, we now have an instrument on apprenticeship, but it remains surprisingly a contentious issue between employers and workers,’ said Mugo, adding that people need the relevant skills to be employed, drive and meet the needs of the labour market.

‘At the Federation of Kenyan Employers, we want to see a very clear link to the skil
ls that are being produced in our learning institutions to curb the future needs of the labour market,’ urged Mugo, citing that the current approach to skills development is more of certificate oriented.

‘Kenyans are crazy about certificates and gather them like sands at the sea shore and they are very proud to have them but do they translate into us being more employable?’ questioned the CEO.

Further, she called upon learning institutions to come up with curriculums that will catch up with the market changes, stressing the importance of monitoring these changes by the institutions to ensure the skills that the people have respond to the dynamics in the labour sector.

‘It is therefore important for Kenyans and Africans at large to harness the benefits of labour migration so that they migrate to the high-level skills rather than those of lower levels for them to be employed in any part of the world,’ added Mugo.

According to the CEO, FKE together with its members employ more than 70 percent of the formal p
rivate sector wage employees in Kenya with the latter being just a quarter of the working population in this country.

Additionally, she observed the need to look at the informal economy, stating that the role of the federation is to build the capacity of the employers and to influence the environment in which business is done.

‘We do this through advocacy, effective representation, social dialogue and through the provision of value-added services,’ Mugo highlighted.

She at the same time said that the federation has a huge and broad role in representing employers at national, regional, continental and global levels.

‘Skills are essential assets of individual businesses and society at large and to cope with the rapidly changing levels, market workers need to benefit from lifelong learning,’ Mugo advised.

Mugo added that the training programme must fill the skill gaps in the country and also address the imbalances between supply and demand to meet the dynamics of the labour market.

‘We as the FKE had to co
pe when Covid happened, we had to cope with a new world, and we are all coping with the technological changes that have happened in the world and which have impacted the labour skills,’ she remarked.

Kenya Hosts 3rd East African Regional Tourism Summit

Kenya is hosting the 3rd East African Regional Tourism Summit at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre (KICC) in a bid to showcase the diverse and captivating tourist destinations across Eastern Africa.

The event aims to foster collaboration among East African nations and promote the region as a prime tourist destination.

Speaking during the summit’s official inauguration, Tourism and Wildlife CS Dr. Alfred Mutua highlighted Kenya’s commitment to tourism, emphasizing its significant role in revenue generation.

Dr. Mutua stressed the importance of building regional circuits to attract more visitors to Eastern Africa.

Drawing inspiration from countries with low populations, such as the Bahamas, Spain and Israel, the CS underscored Kenya’s unique position with a wealth of tourist attractions, particularly its renowned wildlife.

Despite the comparative abundance of attractions, he called for strategic efforts to increase tourism.

Connectivity emerged as a key focus, with Dr. Mutua calling upon the
aviation industry to play a pivotal role as a connecting tool between continents.

Enhancing transportation links within the East African region, asserted Dr. Mutua will contribute significantly to boosting the number of tourists.

The CS also emphasized the importance of ensuring the comfort of tourists during their visit, issuing instructions to all game parks to enhance facilities, including more washrooms.

Furthermore, he advised accommodation managers in hotels to acquire resuscitating machines to address potential medical emergencies, particularly cases of heart attacks, aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists.

The 3rd East African Regional Tourism Summit serves as a platform for East African countries to collaborate, share insights and collectively promote the rich heritage of attractions the region has to offer.

Meanwhile, as the event unfolds, it is expected to pave the way for a new era of regional tourism cooperation and growth.

National Government Staff In Kajiado Plant Trees To Boost Forest Cover

The national government staff in Kajiado County on Tuesday participated in a tree-planting exercise at the County Commissioner’s compound.

Led by County Commissioner Jude Wasonga, the civil servants planted over 250 tree seedlings of different species so as to boost tree cover.

The Commissioner noted that the move was in line with the government’s goal of planting 15 billion trees in 10 years.

‘The government is targeting to plant 15 billion trees in the next 10 years so as to increase the tree cover from the current 12 percent to 30 percent by the year 2032,’ he said.

Kajiado County Youth Coordinator Jennifer Shisoka who participated in the tree planting exercise, noted that trees play a key role in restoring biodiversity, improving air quality and addressing climate change impacts such as drought.

‘Trees are important as they help improve air quality and restore the ecosystem,’ she said.

The Officer challenged the youth to come out in large numbers and plant trees so as to promote tree cover and cons
erve the environment.

Shisoka noted that the trees which were being planted today will be of benefit to the youth in future.

She further called on the youth to be at the forefront in environmental conservation activities by establishing tree nurseries which will also generate them with an income and enable them to be financially independent.

On her part, County Civil Registrar of Persons Christine Gachau called on Kenyans to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant trees and nurture them to maturity.

President William Ruto in December 2022 launched the tree planting programme where 15 billion trees are expected to be planted by 2032.

The move is aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions, stopping and reversing deforestation, and restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscape.

Teachers Urged To Conform To Education Reforms

Teachers in the country are required to upgrade to diploma level to conform to the Competency-Based- Curriculum that the Education Ministry is implementing.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony at the International Teaching and Training Center (ITTC) in Isinya, Kajiado East Sub County, the Director of Teacher Education in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Salome Maina urged all teachers who graduated with a certificate in Early Childhood Education (ECDE) and Primary Teacher Education (PTE) to upgrade to diploma to conform to the new education reforms.

‘Because of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the reforms at the Education Ministry, all the teachers teaching are supposed to be at the diploma level. Practicing teachers are supposed to upgrade in order to comply with the new system of education. All who are graduating with ECDE and PTE, please undertake the one-year upgrading course so that you can attain a diploma,’ Dr. Maina said.

She noted that the 21st Century environment demands a highly flexib
le labour force which is demonstrated in the application of the technical and soft skills competencies.

‘Today’s teacher must possess abilities that make them competitive both locally and globally thus training must go beyond the traditional role of imparting knowledge, skills, and attitude, and it is based on this expectation that the government adopted the CBC that is being implemented in the teacher training colleges.

‘As a country, we are committed to producing a 21st-century teacher who has the requisite teaching skills and is willing to adapt to the learner-centered approaches that lay emphasis on nurturing every learner’s potential and responding to societal needs. We are also expecting teachers who will inspire the learners and engage them in a friendly manner by communicating to them effectively and creating an enabling environment for learning,’ Dr Maina emphasized.

The Director said the government recognizes the critical role played by private institutions which provide education opportunities t
o Kenyans provided they offer quality education and meet expected standards.

Dr Maina further added that all the teachers are required to register with the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), familiarize themselves with the education reforms, and acquire the legal and policy documents on education which are easily accessible at the TSC and Ministry of Education websites.

The Director said the government is committed to ensuring that every Kenyan is given an equal opportunity to learn and study considering education is the right of every Kenyan adding that the government is continually investing in basic education and everyone is expected to actively participate in ensuring both boys and girls are given equal opportunities in education at all levels.

ITTC’s Board of Management chairperson William Aketch urged teachers to perform their role diligently to safeguard the fabric of the nation because they are the ones who shape the future of nations and added they must do so with integrity, professionalism, hone
sty, and honour.

Over 1,200 students graduated in Teacher Education, Primary Teacher Education, and Early Childhood Development Education courses alongside various TVET courses.
