17th Carthage Insurance and Reinsurance RDV May 19-22 in Tunis

Tunis: The Tunisian Federation of Insurance Companies (FTUSA) is organising the 17th Carthage Insurance and Reinsurance RDV from May 19 to 22 on the theme of “The insurance industry and the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI)”.

The choice of this theme reflects the conviction of insurance professionals in Tunisia of the importance of advanced technologies in the development of this activity and in the improvement of its services for the benefit of customers and the various stakeholders, Hatem Aamira, Director General of FTUSA, said in a statement to TAP.

Aamira stressed that the forum’s work will focus on the challenges posed to the insurance sector by artificial intelligence (AI), explaining that the insurance sector has long been based on risk assessment and decision-making based on financial and statistical information.

In this respect, the adoption of artificial intelligence in many sectors has brought benefits in terms of improving the efficiency of operations, including risk management in the
insurance sector.

Aamira said the organisers aim to make the new edition of the Carthage Insurance and Reinsurance RDV an opportunity to study the role of artificial intelligence, particularly in protecting and enhancing the role of this sector in the light of technological and digital developments.

The first day of the meeting will focus on raising awareness of the importance of artificial intelligence in the development of the insurance sector.

The second day of the Forum will focus on the role of AI in proposing an insurance product tailored to the customer’s needs, as well as the importance of AI in improving compensation and combating fraud in the sector.

As part of this event, a ‘hackaton’ on the development of an AI-based insurance system will be organised for the benefit of young AI professionals. FTUSA will award cash prizes to the winners and provide them with guidance and support in the implementation of their projects.

The Carthage RDV is organised by FTUSA in partnership with Tunis Re and th
e General Arab Insurance Federation (GAIF).

Mehrez Boussayene: Work in progress for ‘WADA sanctions to be lifted by end of next week’

Tunis: International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and president of the Tunisian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Mehrez Boussayene said that work and coordination is underway with the IOC, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) to lift the sanctions imposed on Tunisia by the end of next week.

In a statement to TAP on Sunday during the first edition of the annual Olympic Festival for Sustainable Sports in El Alaa, Kairouan governorate, Boussayane added that sanctions had been imposed and the national flag had not been flown at some sporting events following a decision by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

‘There is a failure to deal with the issue,” he said, calling for accountability.

Commenting on the reason for the sanction imposed on Tunisia by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Mehrez Boussayane said that WADA requested the amendment of the law on the National Anti-Doping Agency, but the government decree to implement the law was not issued within the required tim
eframe, he said.

In this regard, he said that the World Anti-Doping Code was amended in 2021 and that the World Anti-Doping Committee asked all countries to update and amend their laws in accordance with the International Code, which was not done for the National Anti-Doping Agency in Tunisia.

He noted that the Tunisian National Olympic Committee sent seven letters to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Anti-Doping Agency asking them to amend the law and meet the deadlines.

Boussayane explained that now that the sanction has come into effect, the National Anti-Doping Agency must send an official communication to WADA informing them that the government decree has come into effect following its publication in the Tunisian Official Gazette, with the aim of convening a meeting to lift the sanction by the end of next week.

Government Decree No. 235 of 2024 amending and supplementing Decree No. 187 of April 5, 2024 on the administrative and financial organisation of ANAD and its methods of operati
on was published in the Tunisian Official Gazette on May 2.

Elderly people: Taking medicines without medical advice can lead to drug interactions (doctor)

Tunis: Taking medicines without medical advice and self-medication for elderly people suffering from a number of chronic illnesses can lead to harmful drug interactions, said geriatric doctor Afef Hammami.

The elderly are exposed to the possibility of drug interactions and undesirable effects on their health if they take incompatible or inappropriate medicines, which is why they need to consult a geriatrician, she told TAP on Sunday.

As we age, the capacity of the kidneys and liver to eliminate residual medicines from the body diminishes, she explained, adding that scientific studies have shown that people over the age of 65 take five or more medicines.

She explained that drug interactions can, in some cases, lead to pathologies or haemorrhages in the brain, and that certain antibiotic drugs can increase blood sugar levels in diabetics, or cause, in another case, a sharp increase in the secretion of certain hormones due to the use of some inappropriate antidepressants and anti-inflammatories, leading to un
desirable interactions.

Afaf Hammami underlined the need for doctors to be familiar with the medicines they administer and to study their interactions in order to ensure the effectiveness of the treatments provided to elderly people suffering from one or more illnesses, calling for the need to avoid self-medication and the use of food supplements without medical advice.

Number of hemophilia patients in Tunisia is around 640″ (ATH President)

Tunis: The number of patients suffering from hemophilia, a hereditary hemorrhagic disease, is around 640 in Tunisia, said president of the Tunisian Hemophilia Association (ATH), Mohamed Taoufik Erraies.

Speaking at a meeting held on Sunday at the City of Science in Tunis to mark the 40th anniversary of the association and World Hemophilia Day, which falls on April 17 each year, he pointed out that hemophilia is caused by a deficiency of a blood clotting factor, leading to recurrent bleeding and spontaneous hemorrhaging.

Erraies pointed out that the ATH is facing a number of challenges, including recording the number of hemophilia patients and collecting data for each region in order to understand the situation and establish a national register of hemophiliacs and people with blood-clotting disorders to facilitate research and medical intervention, as well as promoting care protocols and patient management.

For her part, Emna Gouider, Head of the Hemophilia Unit in Tunis and Vice-President of the World Hemo
philia Federation, highlighted the increase in the number of patients suffering from this hereditary disease, despite the efforts made in terms of prevention and research into appropriate treatments.

She called on relatives of hemophilia patients to learn more about the disease and to opt for the available treatments to alleviate its harmful effects.

The Tunisian Hemophilia Association was founded in 1984 to raise awareness and provide care for people with the disease.
