African Union of Mutuality in North Africa established in Tunisia

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Union of Mutuality (AMU), Mouley Ibrahim Othmani, announced on Wednesday the establishment in Tunisia of the office of the African Union of Mutuality in North Africa, which brings together all the mutual societies in the region.

The UAM, which brings together 23 member countries, was created in 2007. It is a platform committed to strengthening South-South cooperation through the exchange of experiences, dialogue, coordination and advocacy of the African mutual movement with governments and national and international bodies.

In a statement to TAP on the sidelines of a general assembly held at the union’s headquarters at the General Directorate of Customs, Othmani said that the members of the Tunisian branch of the UAM would be elected during the two-day meeting.

He pointed out that the members of the Tunisian branch of the UAM in North Africa are the mutual societies of the Ministry of Finance, customs agents, agents of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Posts
and Telecommunications, agents of the National Tobacco and Matches Board, artists and technicians in the cultural sector and state executives.

He went on to say that the next stage would be to set up two trade union offices in the regions of South Africa and Central Africa, which would also be responsible for East Africa.

For his part, Lotfi Kharrat, representative of the Ministry of Finance, pointed out that there are shortcomings in the management and control of mutual societies in Tunisia, in addition to the lack of conditions for the use of funds and the failure to meet deadlines for the submission of reports and budgets to the Ministry of Supervision.

A specific code for mutual societies has been submitted to the government for approval, he pointed out.
