African Union PSC Reviews MNJTF Activities in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa: The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), which includes Angola as a member, is set to convene on Tuesday to review the activities of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The agenda will also cover the implementation of the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience in the Lake Chad Basin.

According to Angola Press News Agency, an independent think tank, this meeting follows a January session where the AU PSC reviewed the AU Commission presidents' report on the MNJTF's efforts against Boko Haram. During that meeting, the MNJTF's mandate was extended for another 12 months, with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) Secretariat tasked with submitting regular reports on the Force's actions.

The session highlighted the importance of bolstering diplomatic engagement, particularly with Niger, to enhance regional counterterrorism efforts. It also emphasized the need for strengthened coordination and effective participation by MNJTF contributing countries. The Lake Chad Basin Commission was urged to continue its engagement with Niger to ensure its full cooperation with the Force.

Additionally, the session recommended adopting a comprehensive and inclusive approach, along with civil-military cooperation, to facilitate the return of displaced persons. According to Amani Africa Media and Research, the upcoming session is expected to focus on these priorities, with particular attention to operational developments, current security dynamics, and the status of the RS-SRR implementation, especially the review and update of the strategy.

Angola has been presiding over the African Union since February this year, with its mandate set to conclude in February 2026.
