Agreement Between Sonangol and Petrobras Enhances Angola-Brazil Economic Partnership

Luanda: The signing of a memorandum between Sonangol and Petrobras marks a significant development in the Angola-Brazil partnership, focusing on exploring cooperation opportunities for research and development in Angola's offstream sector. This agreement, part of Angolan President Joo Louren§o's recent visit to Brazil, aims to foster collaboration in renewable energy, oil and gas, technology, and training sectors.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the memorandum seeks to leverage Brazil's experience in biofuels to support Angola's energy transition. Diamantino de Azevedo, Angola's Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, emphasized the importance of this Brazilian oil company's return for the energy transition.

The partnership also includes an agreement to develop agricultural and forestry research institutions for sustainable development in semi-arid regions of Angola. This initiative aims to bolster family farming in southern Angola by adapting production technologies suitable for local conditions.

Isaac dos Anjos, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, highlighted the significance of the agreement between the Institute of Agronomic Research and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embapra), which also involves Veterinary Research and Agrarian Development institutes. This collaboration is part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations in key development sectors, with projects like the Cunene Valley initiative promoting irrigated agriculture.

These recent agreements build on previous partnerships established two years ago during President Lula da Silva's visit to Angola. The countries have expanded cooperation in agriculture, tourism, health, education, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises, among other areas.

Brazil remains a vital trading partner for Angola in Africa, with the South American country's exports to Angola reaching $493 million in 2024. Key exports include frozen beef, pork, poultry, and sugar, while Angola primarily exports crude oil and petroleum products to Brazil.

Brazil is a country with a competitive, diversified market and extensive experience in areas such as agriculture, food industry, aeronautics, among others. It has the largest economy in South America, with a GDP of 2.13 trillion dollars.
