Angola Advocates Peaceful Resolution for Libyan Conflict

Luanda: Angolan Foreign Minister Teto Ant³nio on Thursday emphasized the country's stance in advocating for peaceful solutions to the Libyan conflict, condemning any form of interference that contradicts the interests of Libya and the African continent.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Minister Teto Ant³nio articulated this position during the 1291st Meeting of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, representing President Joo Louren§o. The meeting focused on the ongoing political and security challenges in Libya, a topic frequently addressed by the African Union due to the enduring instability since the ousting of President Muammar Kadhafi in 2011.

Minister Ant³nio highlighted the significant fragmentation within Libya since the fall of Kadhafi, noting the division between the Government of National Unity (GNU) based in Tripoli and the Government of National Stability (GNS) in Benghazi. He emphasized the need for collective international efforts to support Libya's stabilization and praised the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), led by Hanna Tetteh, for its vital role.

The Minister urged continued collaboration between UNSMIL and the African Union's relevant bodies, calling upon AU member states to reaffirm their commitment to continental mechanisms aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis. He also congratulated Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for assuming the presidency of the African Union's Peace and Security Council for July.

Furthermore, Minister Ant³nio expressed appreciation for the contributions of Libya's Presidential Council President Mohammed Younis Bashir Al Mnefi and Denis Sassou, Chief of Staff of the African Union's High-Level Committee on Libya, acknowledging the complexity of the prolonged instability in the region. He also commended the information shared by the African Union Commission's President Mohmoud Ali Youssouf and Hanna Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Libya.
