Luanda: Angola and the United Kingdom analyzed the political and security situation in the Great Lakes Region, focusing on the challenges affecting peace and stability on the African continent. According to Angola Press News Agency, this issue was addressed during a meeting between Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs, T©te Ant³nio, and Marco Jowell, head of the Africa Research Group at the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
The discussions also covered the situation in some Southern African countries, emphasizing peace and security issues and regional and international efforts for conflict prevention and resolution. Angola's role in promoting peace and conflict resolution was highlighted, particularly its involvement in mediation efforts through the Luanda Process, aimed at resolving the conflict between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
Marco Jowell was joined by the UK's Ambassador to Angola, Bharat Joshi. The Africa Research Group, a part of the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is dedicated to analyzing the political, economic, social, and security dynamics of Africa, providing analytical support to British foreign policy.
In recent years, Angola and the United Kingdom have aligned more closely on peace and security matters, particularly regarding the Great Lakes Region. The UK monitors international efforts to resolve the eastern DRC crisis and acknowledges the need for a political solution. Angola has supported consultations for an inclusive inter-Congolese dialogue, involving key Congolese parties and political forces, as a step towards lasting peace.
The situation is also monitored at a multilateral level through the International Contact Group for the Great Lakes, comprising the United Kingdom and other international partners. In March 2026, the Group reiterated its support for peace efforts in the region and welcomed Angola's consultations for an inclusive dialogue.
In their bilateral relations, Angola and the United Kingdom prioritize peace and security as common interests, reflecting their commitment to fostering stability in the Great Lakes Region.
