Luanda:Angola and the United States discussed enhancing their bilateral cooperation in migration and consular affairs, as well as diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to Angola Press News Agency, these topics were addressed during a meeting between Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and Shannon Nagy Cazeau, the Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Angola, at the headquarters of Angolan diplomacy.
The meeting also covered issues on the international political agenda, emphasizing diplomatic initiatives to promote peace and security in the Great Lakes region. Shannon Nagy Cazeau praised Angola for its diplomatic efforts towards stability in the DRC and encouraged the continuation of initiatives to foster regional peace and security.
Formal diplomatic relations between Angola and the USA were established on May 19, 1993, when the administration of then-US President Bill Clinton officially recognized the Angolan government. Since the conclusion of Angola's armed conflict in 2002, cooperation has broadened beyond the energy sector to include initiatives in infrastructure, security, and regional geopolitics.
A key project in this partnership is the Lobito Corridor, a strategic railway infrastructure connecting the mining regions of the DRC and Zambia to the Port of Lobito, enhancing Angola's role in regional and international trade and logistics.
