He was a man whose influence and balanced leadership left an indelible mark on the political landscape of Angola. According to Angola Press News Agency, the nationalist's dedication to building the Angolan State was unparalleled. 'Nandó' was known for his patient and conciliatory leadership, deeply committed to the national cause. His sudden death on December 18 in Luanda has plunged the nation into a profound silence, mourning the loss of a significant figure whose presence would have been invaluable in times of institutional demand. Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was not only a former Vice-President and Speaker of the National Assembly but a historic figure whose quiet actions were pivotal in shaping key moments in Angolan political life. The tribute prepared by the Executive before his burial underscor ed his immense contributions, with government officials, political leaders, and citizens gathering to pay their respects. Over the decades, 'Nandó' emerged as a mediator of national consensus, notably playing a crucial role in the peace process in Angola. His thoughtful words and demeanor fostered stability and trust among different political actors, particularly during his 12-year tenure as Speaker of the National Assembly. Born in Luanda on March 5, 1952, he joined the MPLA in 1971 and devoted himself to building the Angolan State post-independence. His roles included serving in the Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola, National Police, Executive, and Parliament. As Prime Minister, Vice-President during the constitutional transition, and Speaker, he was a strategist who worked behind the scenes, avoiding public confrontations. In addition to his political career, 'Nandó' was passionate about sports and held a degree in Law. His legal expertise and political acumen were instrumental in streng thening the democratic State and political system of Angola. With state honors, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos is laid to rest at Alto das Cruzes, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and unity.
