Luanda: Angola has announced its intention to form partnerships with India to establish medicine production units within the country. This initiative aims to bolster Angola's health system, reduce medicine imports, and create qualified jobs. The announcement was made by Angolan President Joo Louren§o during the Angola/India Business Forum, which attracted over 180 business leaders from both nations. This event is part of President Louren§o's state visit to India, which began last Saturday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Louren§o emphasized the significance of India's pharmaceutical industry, recognized globally for its leadership in generic medicine production. He highlighted India's strong international reputation for quality and efficiency, making it a suitable partner for Angola's economic reform and diversification agenda.
The president also pointed to the agricultural sector as a key area for collaboration, noting Angola's extensive arable land, favorable climate, and abundant water resources. These conditions present significant opportunities for investment and technology transfer. Louren§o praised India's expertise in agricultural mechanization, agro-industry, and food production, identifying it as an ideal partner to aid Angola in achieving food security and modernizing its agricultural sector.
In the energy sector, President Louren§o expressed interest in both traditional hydrocarbons and renewable energies, particularly solar energy. He stated that Angola is committed to transitioning towards clean energy, with India poised to play a vital role in expanding such projects, especially in rural areas.
President Louren§o highlighted Angola's strategic location in Southern Africa, providing access to the regional markets of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area. He described Angola as a "logistics and industrial hub of excellence" due to its political stability, infrastructure modernization, and focus on regional economic integration.
The president underscored the importance of Angola's burgeoning relationship with India, built on a solid legal and institutional foundation developed over decades. Existing agreements span various sectors, including health, energy, financial services, and diplomatic mobility. He revealed that further negotiations are underway for new cooperation agreements in information technology, agriculture, construction, and trade.
President Louren§o concluded by acknowledging India's status as a global economic power and expressed Angola's commitment to strengthening economic and business ties with the nation.
