Angola Sets Sights on Becoming Regional Leader in Sustainable Biofuel Production

Luanda: Angola is working on a centered strategy to become a regional reference point in the production of biofuels and derivatives to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, diversify revenue streams and the energy mix, promoting economic growth and social well-being. According to Angola Press News Agency, the Biofuels Strategy 2026-2050 was presented on Wednesday to the members of the government of the province of Moxico-Leste during a visit by the Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, Snio Victor, to that region. The plan is based on the generation of bioethanol, biogas, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) of biological origin. During the presentation of the project, which will shortly be discussed by the Council of Ministers and subsequently forwarded to the National Assembly, technicians from the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) clarified that raw materials such as agricultural, forestry, urban, and oilseed waste will preferably be used, thereby promoting a circular economy. The initiative also aims to contribute to the diversification of the national energy mix, generate a positive impact on job creation, foster the development of agriculture and rural infrastructure, as well as establish a legal and incentive framework for investment and the export of green energy sources. The project expects to open up business opportunities in the agricultural sector, stimulating the production of sugar cane, soya, sunflower, castor bean, and other energy crops. The strategy also aims to encourage investment in the development of distribution networks and retail outlets for organic waste for the production of biofuels and other bio-based products. For the country's eastern region, an afforestation and reforestation project led by the multinational Chevron is planned, focused on the province of Moxico, in the locality of Luchaze, with a pilot phase of around one thousand hectares, scalable up to 20,000 hectares. In Moxico Leste specifically, the project plans the implem entation of sustainable agricultural practices, the restoration of degraded land, and the promotion of the socio-economic development of rural communities. Around 40,000 hectares of land will be prepared in Moxico Leste, with 25,000 hectares allocated for agroforestry and 15,000 for the restoration of Miombo ecosystems. This will enable a reduction in slash-and-burn agriculture, the creation of up to 700 direct jobs, the involvement of around 20,000 farmers, biodiversity conservation, and the improvement of food security.
