Luanda: The Greenfield project linking the Republic of Zambia and Angola is set to launch in 2026, with a valuation of 4.5 billion dollars, as announced by the Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, on Wednesday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister spoke after participating in a panel on ‘Financing an Integrated and Cross-Border African Rail Network.’ He mentioned ongoing efforts to secure financing for the Greenfield project, which aims to connect Zambia and is expected to commence construction next year.
De Abreu highlighted the involvement of several financing stakeholders, including the European Union through the Global Gateway Initiative and the MATEI plan, alongside the African Development Bank. These entities will help bridge the funding gap for the project’s viability.
Additionally, the minister noted that the United States and Egypt have shown interest in contributing to the financing. He emphasized that the African Finance Corporation (AFC), which serves as the project’s concessionaire, is managing the process as per the schedule.
“By 2025, we are committed to finalizing all the conditions precedent for launching the project in 2026,” stated the minister.
