Baku: The Angolan ambassador to Azerbaijan, Augusto da Silva Cunha, on Sunday expressed Angola’s interest in signing several agreements with the authorities of Azerbaijan to strengthen bilateral cooperation. According to the diplomat, a proposal for a memorandum of understanding on public consultations is in the pipeline, aiming to evolve into cooperation in training between Angola and Azerbaijan.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the ambassador highlighted Angola’s participation in an upcoming climate conference and expressed hope that the visit of the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, to Baku, would initiate deeper and more fruitful cooperation. He mentioned a proposal for an agreement on the abolition of visas in diplomatic and service passports, emphasizing that this cooperation is beneficial for Angola, as Azerbaijan is a country with significant oil and gas resources, contributing 90% to its GDP.
The Vice President will also engage in courtesy greetings with Azerbaijani authorit
ies, including the Prime Minister. The ambassador underscored the importance of the Vice President witnessing the signing of the memorandum of public consultations, which he considers a crucial step in revitalizing cooperation with Azerbaijan.
The Vice-President, Esperança da Costa, is also set to participate in the commemorative act of Angola’s 49th anniversary of independence in Baku. The ceremony will include Azerbaijani officials and diplomats. Costa arrived in Azerbaijan on Sunday afternoon to take part in the 29th High-Level Conference on Climate Change, scheduled for November 11-12, themed ‘Increase Ambition, Enable Action’.
COP-29 aims to address climate change challenges, seek solutions to global environmental issues, and negotiate agreements. The conference focuses on limiting global warming to 1.5°C and prioritizes negotiations around new collective climate finance targets. This edition is expected to facilitate broad discussions to accelerate the energy transition.
