Washington: The Angolan ambassador to Washington, Agostinho Van-Dºnem, stated on Friday that relations between Angola and the United States of America are expected to strengthen following the signing of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the diplomat emphasized that President Joo Louren§o's direct involvement in the peace process cements Angola's role as a key partner for peace, security, and economic development in Africa. On Thursday, President Louren§o attended the signing of the peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, officiated by presidents F©lix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame in a ceremony endorsed by Donald Trump, the president of the United States.
The ambassador, speaking after accompanying Foreign Minister Tet© Ant³nio to the African Union mission headquarters in the US, highlighted that the economic provisions outlined in the agreement present new opportunities for collaboration with the United States and the nations in the Great Lakes region. "Angola emerges with a strengthened position as an actor for peace and regional integration, and will continue to work with American and African authorities to implement the commitments made," he stated.
Investments in the Lobito Corridor
Agostinho Van-Dºnem also discussed the recent joint declaration by the United States and the European Union, which pledges investment in the Great Lakes region and the Lobito Corridor. The diplomat indicated that the embassy is actively working to secure financing and attract business interests to Angola and the region.
He elaborated on the significance of the Lobito Corridor, stating it encompasses not only rail transport but also agriculture, telecommunications, energy, and road infrastructure, all of which are integral to stimulating local economies. The ambassador noted that the mission in Washington is fostering connections between business leaders, identifying funding sources, and organizing events like the United States-Africa Business Summit in Luanda.
Migration Issues
Addressing concerns about Angolan citizens detained or facing deportation in the United States, the ambassador mentioned that the diplomatic mission is enhancing awareness campaigns within the community to stress the importance of legal entry and adherence to US laws. Agostinho Van-Dºnem acknowledged the US's stringent immigration policies that impact various nationalities, including Angolans.
The embassy provides legal support, offers guidance, funds law firms, and conducts community workshops. "Our goal is to ensure that those who have to be deported are deported with dignity. We do not want to repeat negative episodes experienced by citizens of other countries," he remarked.
The diplomat reported that over 20 Angolans have been deported recently on flights carrying citizens of multiple nationalities. He also highlighted the need for Angola to enhance its systems for issuing identification documents, as data inconsistencies have led to critical situations for some citizens in the US. He welcomed the future introduction of Angolan electronic passports.
US Concerns about Angolan Documents
Regarding concerns about Angolan document security, the ambassador assured that the passports are secure and authentic, with the primary challenge being the access to the initial documentation process. He emphasized the need for stricter measures in issuing identity cards and birth certificates.
The US expects Angola to address this issue promptly to prevent restrictions that are already impacting other countries.
