Luanda: Angolan President João Lourenço has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Spanish people, particularly to King Filipe VI, following the devastating floods in the Valencia region. In a public message shared on the Presidency of the Republic’s Facebook page, President Lourenço conveyed his deep sorrow over the significant human and material losses resulting from the severe weather conditions that struck on October 29.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Lourenço extended his solidarity to the Spanish monarch and the families affected by the tragedy. He emphasized his unwavering support and sympathy during this challenging period for the community of Valencia. The president’s message highlighted the profound impact of the floods, which have claimed more than a hundred lives across various regions in Spain.
The catastrophic weather events were triggered by a meteorological phenomenon known as DANA, or an ‘isolated depression at high levels.’ This phenomenon has led to torrential rains
and storms, particularly affecting Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The Valencian Community, on the eastern side of the country, experienced unprecedented rainfall levels, prompting severe civil protection and meteorological alerts.
This disaster is considered one of the most severe natural calamities in Spain in the past 75 years, surpassing the tragic floods in Biescas in 1996 and Turia in 1957. The magnitude of the devastation has drawn international attention and prompted expressions of solidarity from global leaders.
