Luanda: Angolan President Joo Louren§o reaffirmed on Wednesday his country's commitment to mitigating climate change and called on the most industrialized nations to assume greater responsibility in the transition to green and sustainable economies. "We hope that the conclusions of COP30 will reinforce the global commitment to reducing emissions, protecting the environment, and providing solidarity support to the most affected countries. Only in this way can we guarantee a sustainable future for future generations," said the Angolan president.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan president made the remarks during a joint press conference with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He expressed expectations regarding the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-30) to take place in Brazil, highlighting the importance of the event as it takes place "in the heart of the Amazon, one of the main lungs of the planet."
Joo Louren§o explained that, although he cannot personally attend the summit due to the proximity of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, Angola will be duly represented at the meeting. "It is a pity that one of the main contributors has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement, but we are confident that the rest of the world, particularly Europe, which has just signed an important climate agreement, will effectively contribute to reducing emissions of polluting gases, thus helping to save the planet," he stated.
The Angolan statesman also highlighted the need to fulfill the financial commitments made at previous conferences, especially those aimed at supporting developing countries, which, despite emitting fewer polluting gases, suffer more severely from the impacts of climate change. Joo Louren§o cited countries of the Global South and, in particular, the small islands of the Pacific, which, year after year, face rising sea levels, threatening their very existence.
Finally, President Joo Louren§o reinforced his conviction that COP-30 will represent an opportunity to renew international solidarity and strengthen cooperation between the Global North and South, in favor of environmental sustainability and the preservation of life on the planet.
