London:The Minister of Tourism, Márcio Daniel, was awarded the 'Tourism Personality of the Year' accolade at the 2026 Africa Tourism Awards, also known as the Balearica Awards, held in London, United Kingdom, on Sunday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the award acknowledges the minister's leadership and strategic vision in transforming Angola's tourism sector and his efforts in promoting initiatives to establish the country as a leader in attracting tourism investments across Africa.
The recognition follows an evaluation process that included assessments by an independent panel of judges and a public vote. The criteria focused on innovation, impact on tourism development, sustainability, leadership, and contributions to the growth of the African tourism industry.
Significant initiatives contributing to the award include structural reforms such as the simplification of administrative procedures, digitalization of tourism licensing, territorial planning, and revitalization of tourism asset concessions. These measures aim to improve the business environment and increase private-sector investment in tourism.
A notable achievement at both continental and international levels is Angola's role as the first African co-founding country of UNT-PASS, a UN Tourism global platform designed to connect tourism projects with institutional and private investors. This initiative positions Angola as a pioneer in developing new international mechanisms for mobilizing tourism funding.
Additionally, Angola's participation as the 'Host Country' at ITB Berlin 2026, marking it as the third African nation to hold this status at a major tourism trade fair, was highlighted. This participation enhanced Angola's international profile and strengthened Africa's presence in global tourism networks.
Bruno Ricardo Cardoso de Matos, National Director for the Economy of Tourism Concessions, received the award on behalf of the minister. The Ministry of Tourism stated that this distinction signifies international recognition of efforts to establish tourism as a strategic economic activity that creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, young people, and local communities in Angola and across Africa.
The 2026 Africa Tourism Awards ceremony was part of this year's edition of the event, celebrating individuals and initiatives that have significantly contributed to developing the African tourism industry.
