Burkina: the government wants to increase the rural electrification rate to 50% in 2028

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government adopted a decree on Wednesday to implement a rural electrification strategy aimed at increasing the rate to 50% in 2028. With a view to reducing the disparities in electrification rates between rural and urban areas, the government adopted the decree reorganizing electrification in rural centers, indicates the report of the council of ministers of Wednesday 17 July 2024. According to the same source, the innovations of the decree include, among others, the suspension of the creation of new electricity cooperatives without concessions and the granting of concessions to the professional private sector for massive investment in rural areas. In addition, electricity cooperatives that do not have concessions or demonstrate poor management will see their localities transferred to SONABEL for exploitation.
