Caala:The cold chain at the Caala Logistics Platform in Huambo Province is set to manage 5,000 tonnes of agricultural products during its first year, Secretary of State for Transport Jorge Bengue announced at the facility's inauguration.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the newly inaugurated facility spans 1.2 hectares and includes 15 refrigerated containers, each capable of storing 10 tonnes. It is strategically located about 300 meters from the Lobito Corridor railway line to enhance the preservation, storage, and transportation of agricultural produce.
Jorge Bengue indicated that by the second year, storage capacity could increase to 7,000 to 10,000 tonnes, potentially creating 50 jobs. The initial investment of USD 2.5 million is supported by USD 1.5 million from the World Bank's Diversifica Mais Project and USD 1 million from the Angolan State via the Angola Regulatory Agency for Cargo Certification and Logistics (ARCCLA).
The permanent project aims to generate approximately 400 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs and improve product preservation and market planning. Caala's location is considered strategic for connecting agricultural produce from the interior to efficient logistics and international market opportunities.
Huambo Provincial Governor Pereira Alfredo emphasized the platform's potential to leverage the region's geographical advantages, improve goods movement, and strengthen the agricultural value chain. The project highlights the collaborative efforts of the Angolan Government, World Bank, Netherlands, ARCCLA, and local producers.
This cold chain marks the first major achievement under the National Logistics Platforms Network, aimed at reducing distribution costs and enhancing the national economy.
