Cap Gammarth/Carthage: Work to protect coast from erosion to start in mid-2024

Work to protect the Tunis coastline from Cap Gammarth to Carthage against coastal erosion will begin in mid-2024.

This was agreed at a working meeting on Monday between the acting CEO of the Agence de Protection et d’Aménagement du Littoral (APAL) and a high-level delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development, which is financing the coastal erosion protection project through a loan.

At an estimated cost of 70 million Saudi riyals (equivalent to 58 million dinars), the work will cover 12 kilometres of coastline.

The meeting, attended by a representative of the Ministry of Economy and APAL executives, provided an opportunity to present the results of the supplementary study for this project, which has just been completed.

Tunisia is the country with the highest rate of erosion for eroding sections in the Maghreb region, with 2.4 metre a year on average, resulting in losses and damage equivalent to 2.8% of GDP, according to a World Bank report published in September 2021.

According to the report, entitled
” Disappearing coasts: Coastal erosion and its costs in the Maghreb” erosion in Tunisia causes significant direct costs of more than $1.1 billion.
