Luanda: The Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Cardiopulmonary Disease Hospital Complex (CHDCP) on Monday successfully performed the first cardiac surgery of 2026. This highly complex procedure consisted of mitral and aortic valve replacement with biological prostheses.
According to Angola Press News Agency, a press release sent by the institution states that the surgical intervention was led by surgeon Yuri Betuel and lasted approximately 4 hours and 47 minutes. This time, the statement said, at the end of the surgery, Yuri Betuel highlighted the technical and clinical success of the procedure.
"We had a very positive surgery; the intervention was successful from a technical and clinical point of view," the note states. It clarifies that "the patient is stable, on assisted ventilation, already progressing towards ventilator weaning, under supervision in the Intensive Care Unit, with favorable evolution so far."
This first surgery of the year has a special meaning for the team and the institution, as it represents the full resumption of surgical activity, the continued commitment to life, and the consolidation of the team's technical capacity, reads the statement. For this year, the CHDCP plans to reinforce its strategic role in the National Health System, aiming to reach the goal of 200 cardiac surgeries in the next 365 days.
During the year 2025, 197 highly complex cardiovascular surgeries were performed-a number that reflects the continuous effort of the multidisciplinary team, despite structural challenges.
