Conagen Expands Natural Preservation by Fermentation

Bedford, Mass., Aug. 24, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the “clean label” trend thrives in many consumer product categories, Massachusetts-based biotech Conagen announced the launch of a natural preservative, p-Coumaric Acid (PCA). Conagen’s PCA is made by fermentation and expands the natural preservatives offered by its commercialization partner Blue California.

The natural preservation market is driven by consumer exploration of clean-label food, beverage, personal care, and cosmetic product which do not contain artificial ingredients while still possessing extended shelf life.

In a published Mintel report Feb. 2021, U.S. Consumers were polled on relating ‘naturalness’ with ‘health, “43% of U.S. consumers have the perception that “all-natural” is an important factor when choosing healthy food and beverages.”

Food and beverage manufacturers are moving away from artificial ingredients in their processing and packaging methods. Therefore, new sources of natural preservatives, such as Conagen’s natural, fermentation-derived PCA, are ideal for brands to make a seamless change from synthetic preservation ingredients to natural ones.

“Our PCA expands the toolbox for product developers looking for a scalable, low cost-in-use, natural solution for increasing the shelf life of food without interfering with the flavor of their products,” said Conagen’s Vice President of Innovation, Dr. Casey Lippmeier.

PCA is a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial compound found in all plants, primarily peanuts, tomatoes, carrots, basil, and garlic. It is a key constituent of wine, vinegar, and honey.

Conagen produces PCA by an innovative precision fermentation process. This technology enables the cultivation of micro-organisms programmed to create sustainable, natural ingredients with high purity at a price competitive with synthetic PCA. PCA by fermentation is ideal for industrial applications as well.

“A sustainable source of PCA is also desirable as a precursor for different biopolymers and other high-tech biomaterials made with ‘green chemistry,”‘ said Lippmeier.

Green chemicals are a part of the global discussion on climate change and large chemical companies’ accelerating adoption of sustainable materials. “The novel polymers and co-polymers which can be made by fermentation-derived PCA enable the development of environmentally safer bioplastics and new applications in biomedicine,” said Lippmeier.

As an alternative to chemically synthesized compounds like bisphenol-A, PCA is a multifunctional natural and sustainable solution found in food to enable new and novel products by formulators and material scientists.

In the industrial applications space, PCA is ideal in coatings, composites, adhesives, and polymers for biomedical, transportation, aerospace, electronics, and packaging, just to name a few.

Last year, Blue California and Conagen jointly announced the commercialization of a 98% pure natural preservative, Rosavel™ rosmarinic acid, without the intensity of rosemary flavor and color as with most synthetic ingredients.  Another important natural preservative molecule derived from Conagen’s platform technologies is BC-DHQTM taxifolin, which secured GRAS status as announced last May.

Vinamilk ramps up R&D efforts to win big globally

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam, Aug. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Vietnam Dairy Products JSC (Vinamilk) is accelerating R&D efforts to create innovative products enriched with local flavours to satisfy global customers’ diverse tastes.

With its strategic investment in product development, international expansion, and commitment to sustainability, Vinamilk has become the only Vietnamese dairy company in the Top 50 global dairy producers in 2021, ranked 36th.

Vinamilk’s local touch earns international trust

Vinamilk's innovative products enriched with local flavours

Vinamilk’s R&D efforts have developed customized products tailored to the Asian, African and Middle East markets, despite the challenge of limited research data in some regions.

Starting with only one infant cereal SKU, the company has since successfully developed and established 66 SKUs in multiple markets. One of Vinamilk’s successful innovative products is the Vinamilk Ridielac infant cereal with banana & date flavour. Launched in the Middle East market 5 years ago, this infant cereal with a twist of distinctive local flavour has been widely received, underpinning the subsequent penetration into the North African region upon the shared sentiment towards this delicacy.

The dairy giant has also enriched its African products with vitamin A and minerals to help tackle the challenge of vitamin A deficiency. This problem has left 42.4% of sub-Saharan African children with an increased risk of childhood mortality.

In the Middle East, which makes up 80% of Vinamilk’s export revenue, the brand’s localised Ridielac product is a favourite among locals, especially for the variety in flavours that has enabled consumers to switch regularly for their babies’ daily diet.

In Asia, Vinamilk has introduced sweetened condensed coconut milk in Japan to address demands for plant-based milk, while catering to local consumers with milk allergy.

“Our long-term relationship with Vinamilk was built upon accurate and flexible export services and high-quality products meeting all Japanese standards. We found the newly developed Condensed Coconut Milk impressive, and hold very high expectation that it will perform well in this market,” said Mr. Jun Hamada, Vinamilk’s Japanese partner.

The sustaining business strategy that results in growth despite COVID-19

Vinamilk's R&D department contributes significantly to the success of exported products

Vinamilk’s overseas success significantly contributed by solid R&D team of highly qualified personnel with deep knowledge on food regulations in the export markets, together with continuous investment in global cooperation.

Along with local partners including domestic and international nutrition research institute cooperation, Vinamilk provides nutritional values that best fit the local market.

Since 1998, Vinamilk has recorded significant growth of export markets, exported product categories and SKUs. Overseas business currently accounts for 15 percent of Vinamilk’s total revenue.

With its business strategy and sustainable focus, Vinamilk grew steadily in the 1st half of 2021 despite COVID-19 challenges, boasting an export revenue of VND 2,772 billion (US$ 121.5 million), up 13.1% YoY.

Vinamilk continues to make significant investment for global expansion

Vinamilk's Export Business Overview

The strategy to invest extensively in the dairy industry and offer Filipino consumers healthy dairy and beverage products that fit their tastes at reasonable prices. The joint venture’s products are expected to reach Filipino consumers in September 2021.

Vinamilk has three factories in the US, New Zealand, and Cambodia and a dairy farm complex in Laos. The first constructional phase of the farm complex which has a capacity of 8,000 cow heads that produces approximately 44,000 tons of milk each year, is expected to be put into operation in the 1st quarter of 2022.

FRISCO, Texas, Aug. 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Argon Medical Devices, Inc., a leading manufacturer of medical devices for interventional procedures, announced the commercial launch of SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheters in the United States and the European Union.

Argon Medical Devices, Inc. Logo.

The SKATER™ Mini-Loop is a drainage catheter placed through the skin using imaging guidance as a minimally invasive way to remove or drain an unwanted fluid collection. The SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter is an expansion of Argon’s SKATER™ All-Purpose and Nephrostomy drainage portfolio, and it uses a 40% smaller loop to help secure the catheter and drain fluid from smaller cavities.

We are excited to complete our SKATER™ portfolio of drainage solutions and celebrate this next launch in our Year of Innovation,” said George A. Leondis, President and CEO of Argon Medical Devices.

“The SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter is easily inserted and forms a tight loop formation to prevent drainage occlusion. Unlike other drainage catheters in the class, SKATER™ Mini-Loop is compatible with alcohol and has durability to resist kinking, which is important to me.” said Dr. Sujoy Menon, an Interventional Radiologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Menon and Dr. Sayed Ali, a resident of the Rutgers Medical School, were the first physicians in the United States to use the SKATER™ Mini-Loop Drainage Catheter.
