ROLLER HOCKEY: 1º DE AGOSTO WIN LUANDA TOURNAMENT

Luanda – The team of 1º de Agosto became Luanda provincial roller hockey champions by beating Geninhos, 7-4, in the best of three games played today (Saturday), at the Dream Space pavilion in Viana.

At half time, the coach Rui Miguel’s team was losing by two balls, but had more competitive capacity to reverse the scoreboard.

With this victory, the “military” club do the double, after also having conquered the opening tournament of the capital of the country.

Third place was taken by Petro de Luanda, followed by Académica, Sagrado Coração de Jesus and Marinha de Guerra.

At the end, the champions coach, Rui Miguel, attributed the achievement to the collective effort, which fulfilled one of the club’s objectives.

On the opponents side, coach Inácio Santos “Mama”, recognised the opponent’s superiority who, according to him, knew how to take advantage of the opportunities created.

ANGOLAN ATHLETE AT 200 METERS SEMI-FINALS

Luanda – The Angolan athlete, Juliana Moko, this Thursday qualified for the semi-finals of the 200 meters for visually impaired athletes, class T11, of the Paralympic Games taking place in Tokyo (Japan).

In track three of the second series, Moko clocked 27.27 seconds being among the eight best athletes in the specialty in the world, who on Friday are looking for a pass to the final, at the Olympic Stadium.

The sprinter from the province of Benguela thus surpasses her previous mark of 29.12, established at the international meeting held in 2019, in Tunisia.

It is currently ranked 34th in the World Ranking.

It should be remembered that Angola has already disputed in the semi-finals of the 100 meters and 400m, in these games that take place without public, due to the Covid – 19 pandemic.

Angola also participated with long-distance runner Manuel Jaime, who was in the 1500 eliminatory race.

JOSÉ LUÍS MENDONÇA WINS SADC JOURNALISM AWARD

Luanda – Angolan journalist José Luís Mendonça has won the 2021 edition of the SADC Journalism Award, in the press category.

According to the organizers, in a statement that ANGOP had access this Tuesday, José Luís Mendonça, with a work that addresses the promotion of regional integration, from a purely cultural and civilizational perspective, obtained 79.5 percent of the general evaluation of the jury.

 

In addition to a diploma of merit, the journalist and writer is entitled to receive 2,500 dollars as a prize.

 

José Luís Mendonça was born in Gulungo Alto, northern province of Cuanza Norte, on November 24, 1955.

 

The SADC Journalism Award was established in 1996 to recognize and encourage the work of media professionals who compete to promote the objectives of regional integration and development in the region.

GOALKEEPER TONY GOURD JOINS KABUSCORP DO PALANCA

Luanda – The Angolan goalkeeper Tony Cabaça has signed a 1-year contract with recently promoted to the first division football championship, Kabuscorp do Palanca, the club said in its official facebook page.

The goalkeeper, who played for August 1st since 2012, was elected best player of the African Champions League in 2018.

In addition to Tony Cabaça, the Palanca team have bolstered their squad with Edmilson (formerly 1st August), the Congolese right winger, Ricky Tulengi (formerly Vita Club of Kinshasa), the left winger, Manú and Mabele (formerly Kilamba City).

Kabuscorp was promoted to Girabola2021/2022, after being disqualified from the top division by the Angola Football Federation over breach of contract with technical team and athletes.

OLYMPIC GAMES: HANDBALL TEAM LOSE FOR THIRD TIME

Luanda – Angola senior women’s handball team lost 28-37 to Netherlands on Thursday in the Group A of the Tokyo Olympic Games, being the third defeat the Southern African country squad suffered in the tournament.

Facing the world champions, the African women once again showed poor competitive ability, as in the other two matches the Angolans were beaten by Montenegro (22-33) and Norway, the European champions (21-30).

Angola face Japan on Saturday in the penultimate game of this phase.

OLYMPIC GAMES: ANGOLAN JUDO TEAMS FIGHT SUNDAY

Luanda – Angolan judoka Diassonema Neide, in the -57kg category, the only Angolan representative in the judo discipline at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, will start competing this Sunday.

The event, in which Angola is participating for the 10th time, kicked off last Friday.

Angola will start its participation with women’s judo and handball.

Neide, African champion of -57 kg in 2019, in Madagascar, will make her debut in the competition, succeeding her current coach, Antónia de Fátima “Faia”.

Almost at the end of her preparation in France, Neide tested positive to Covid -19.

Submitted to treatment, she quickly recovered and went back to training focused on the objective of improving her mark and fighting not to be eliminated in the first phase. For this, she will have the guidance of Faia, an internationally experienced athlete.

Historical Overview

Angolan judo debuted in Seúl in 1988 with seven male athletes, namely, Adão Dias, Hélder de Carvalho (passed away), José António, Lotuala N’Dombassy, Luís Fortunato, Moisés Torres and Ricardo José.

In the 1992 games, in Barcelona (Spain), the number was reduced to three judokas, also in men, the athletes Francisco de Sousa, João de Sousa and José Maria were the participants.

In Athens´2004, London´2012 and Rio de Janeiro´2016, female judo dominated with the sole presence of Antónia de Fátima Moreira “Faia” (70kg).

In addition to women’s judo and handball, Angola is present in competition with athletics, swimming and sailing.

PETRO, SAGRADA WIN AND TRANSFER TITLE DECISION

Luanda – The win of Petro de Luanda and Sagrada Esperança this Saturday, for the 29th round of the National Football Championship (Girabola2021), transfers the decision of the title to the last round of the competition.

With 67 points each, the leader Sagrada and the second placed Petro de Luanda will face each other on July 31st, at 11 de Novembro Stadium, in the final match of the competition and decisive for the trophy.

In the 29th-round match, played at the Ferrovia stadium, in Lubango city, Petro de Luanda defeated Desportivo da Huila, by 1-0, with a solitary goal by Tiago Azulão, in the 51st minute.

With this result, Desportivo da Huíla are 11th, with 31 points.

Sagrada Esperança da Lunda Norte, on their turn, also achieved the feat, at Dundo, against Progresso Sambizanga, by 2-0, with goals by Caxi and Karanga, in the 21st and 44th minutes.

With the defeat, Progresso remain in 9th place, with 31 points.

Still on Saturday, 1º de Agosto (3rd/61 points) beat Santa Rita de Cássia do Uige (14th/28) by 4-2, at 11 de Novembro Stadium.

With just one point, Ferrovia do Huambo come last on the standing, thus “preparing” for relegation.

PRESIDENT HANDS OVER FLAG TO ANGOLAN OLYMPIC DELEGATION

Luanda – The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, this Sunday handed over the Republic Flag to the country’s delegation to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, urging its members to honor the nation, regardless of the number of medals.

João Lourenço took part in the ceremony to hand over the Republic’s Flag and farewell the Angolan delegation to the Olympic Games, taking place from 24th of this month to 8th of August, and Paralimpicos, from 24th of August to 8th of September, both competitions in Tokyo.

The President of the Republic considered it meritorious and a dream of any athlete to represent the country in both events, fighting to win the medals in dispute.

He said he knew that he delivered the flag in good hands and to “young people who will do everything to honor the good name of Angola, (…) no matter how many medals they bring to the country”.

The minister of Youth and Sports, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto, declared that the delegations will participate with the aim of representing and doing well.

The chairperson of the Angolan Olympic Committee (COA), Gustavo da Conceição, said that Angola is prepared to have a fair participation, both with the Olympic team and with the Paralympic team.

He added that the Angolan Olympic team is made up of 39 athletes from five sports, three of which qualified on merit and for having completed the qualifying games, namely handball, sailing and judo.

The other two, he explained, athletics and swimming, in accordance with the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), are open to participation by all countries in the world.

The chairperson of the Angolan Olympic Committee informed that of the 39 members of the delegation, 23 are women and 16 men. “We will do everything to dignify national sport and show the world the potential of Angolan sports youth.”

He said that in the Paralympic Games, taking place from 24 August to 8 September, Angola will participate with two athletes classified by merit in athletics. Of these athletes, one is visually impaired and the other is motor.

Angola’s flag bearer, Natália Bernardo, thanked the recognition and considered the huge responsibility she received from her sister, who played the same role in the previous Olympics.

Natália Bernardo said that the Angolan delegation leaves for Tokyo with the expectation of improving national scores.

Judoka Neide Diassoma considered it a dream and privilege for any athlete to be part of the delegation.

The handing over of the Republic’s Flag, among other entities, was attended by ministers of state, ministers, secretaries of the President of the Republic, as well as the newly appointed provincial governor of Luanda, Ana Paula de Carvalho.

“LIBOLO COACH BLAMES TEAM DEFEAT ON FATIGUE

Dundo – Recreativo do Libolo head coach Paulo Torres, on Saturday said his team entered sad and tired on the pitch for the 23rd round match of the National Top Division Football Championship (Girabola2020-2021) in which they lost 2-0 to Sagrada Esperança.

“We wanted to arrive in Dundo with a different physical posture, unfortunately we arrived at dawn today, we spent the whole day without resting and it was impossible to do a good result because the players are not machines,” the coach said.

Despite the defeat, he said, his players gave everything they had on the pitch not to make an easy task for Sagrada.

Paulo Torres added that the team, currently in 10th place with 28 points, will now fight to avoid relegation in the championship and that they seek to win the remaining three matches.

Sagrada Esperança lead the championship with 64 points, followed by Petro de Luanda with 63 points.

SAGRADA CLOSE TO WIN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Dundo – Lunda Norte-based Sagrada Esperança team retook the lead of the National First Division Football Championship and are now very close to lift the title after beating Recreativo do Libolo 2-0 on Saturday for the 23rd round.

The match was of high pressure for Sagrada Esperança as they were forced to win to feed the dream of reaching the second title. The game also was a tribute to the late skipper of the Eastern Lunda Norte province team, Francisco Quintino, who passed away on Wednesday, victim of illness.

With this score Sagrada Esperança reached 64 points against 63 pts of Petro de Luanda with three rounds remaining for the end of the championship.

In the next three rounds, the leader face Recreativo da Caála, (away)Progresso Sambizanga (home) and Petro de Luanda (away).
