County to adopt sustainable farming practices

The Cereals Growers Association (CGA) in partnership with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization have initiated a three-year project aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices. The project manager George Mabuka says the programme which runs from August 2024 to July 2027 targets 25,000 small holder farmers in Vihiga County. Speaking during a stakeholder meeting at a Vihiga hotel, Mabuka stated that they are targeting maize, beans, soya, African leafy vegetables and iron rich pulses value chains depending on the different agroecological zones across the county. He said the programme also aims to foster inclusive markets and trade for small holder farmers as well as boost food and nutritional security in the County. The manager pointed out that Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) would sponsor training forums for capacity building while KALRO would provide quality certified seeds. Vihiga County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture Nicholas Kitungulu, lauded CGA for coming up with the noble project that would transform the lives of the farmers.
