Baku:Cunene Provincial authorities in Cunene have launched the "Child-Friendly Municipality" initiative aimed at bolstering legal protection, social welfare, and fundamental rights for minors throughout the region. The program seeks to place local municipal administrations at the forefront of identifying social challenges, setting priorities, and executing child-welfare policies.
According to Angola Press News Agency, acting provincial governor Generoso Kondjassili emphasized the need for children's rights to ensure access to healthcare, adequate nutrition, basic sanitation, birth registration, protection against violence, and social inclusion, particularly for the most vulnerable children.
The initiative is part of Angola's broader strategy under the 11 Commitments to Children and the country's Law on the Protection and Integral Development of Children. Officials highlighted the necessity of coordinated efforts among public bodies, private entities, and civil society organizations to advance these measures.
During the rollout event, Ângelo Cambera, executive secretary of the National Council for Social Action, assessed the country's progress toward child welfare goals. Despite advances in primary education, health services, and birth registration, Cambera noted that early childhood education lags due to a lack of care centers and that child labor remains prevalent due to adult unawareness and household vulnerabilities.
Georgina Braga, director of the Secretariat for Social Action, Family and Gender Equality, stated that the event reinforced local governance in safeguarding young citizens. The event concluded with the presentation of municipal child development profiles, a national report on children's conditions, and the awarding of certificates and "Child-Friendly Municipality" flags to participating administrations.
