Cairo: The life and work of António Agostinho Neto, the founder of the Angolan nation, were the central themes of a political, diplomatic, and cultural gathering hosted by the Angolan Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. The event, held on Wednesday, was organized to commemorate National Hero's Day. According to Angola Press News Agency, the event brought together ambassadors from various countries, academics, and students. Angolan academic António Quino served as the keynote speaker, addressing the diverse aspects of Neto's career, ranging from identity and education to his involvement in the struggle for independence and diplomacy. Quino also highlighted Neto's contributions to Pan-Africanism, culture, and his lasting continental legacy. Quino noted the significant influence of Neto's family and political upbringing in Portugal, which was marked by colonial persecution. He emphasized Neto's pivotal role in securing Angola's independence in 1975. The discussion also covered key diplomatic episodes in Neto's life, incl uding his audience with Pope Paul VI and the Lusaka Conference, both of which elevated Neto's international profile and connected him to the Pan-Africanist movement. The speaker lauded Agostinho Neto's literary contributions, particularly his poetry, which is regarded as a collective memory of the African struggle. Quino defended Neto's vision of integrating Marxism with Pan-Africanism. Angolan ambassador to Egypt, Maquento Sebastio Lopes, also spoke at the event, remembering Neto as a politician of strong convictions, but more importantly, as a man of culture, a humanist doctor, and a Pan-Africanist. The gathering was part of Angola's celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of its independence. It was attended by the ambassadors of Portugal, Cuba, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania, Colombia, Equatorial Guinea, and Mozambique, alongside other diplomats, academics, and students.
