GGPN Creates Startup Network to Expand Internet Access Using ANGOSAT-2

Luanda: Angola's National Program Management Office (GGPN) is establishing a network of technology companies to expand internet access using ANGOSAT-2 and the new "TV White Space" technology. According to Angola Press News Agency, the initiative aims to bring internet signals to other locations across the country with the support of small entrepreneurs. Speaking to the press this Friday in Luanda during a meeting with startups from the "Conecta Angola" (Connect Angola) project, startup coordinator Hermeliana Soares stated that over 60 startups have already registered. She explained that the provinces of Luanda, Malanje, Huambo, Uíge, and Bengo have been among the primary beneficiaries regarding signal distribution within communities. She highlighted that the model also includes connectivity points at universities in Uíge, Huíla, Namibe, and Luanda, with the goal of reaching all 21 of the country's provinces. She noted that to be eligible, companies require a multi-service license issued by INACOM and tech nicians with knowledge of telecommunications. She affirmed that the GGPN would ensure continuous training to share knowledge and provide technical support for modem configuration. "The GGPN is determined to work with startups from across the entire country, provided they meet the eligibility criteria," she assured. She added that this new technological approach will combine ANGOSAT-2's space-based capabilities with TV White Space technology; this will allow for a 10-kilometer coverage radius per access point-expandable via relay antennas, thereby extending reach to more municipalities and communes. Hermeliana Soares also mentioned that some of the current emerging companies originated from training sessions held during the ANGOTIC event and will integrate their existing expertise with this new technology. The project features an official website, Conecta Angola Comercial, for new registrations, and maintains a stock of kits that is being replenished through periodic acquisitions to meet demand. Currently i n a pilot phase-with full rollout scheduled for October of this year-the program addresses the country's low connectivity rate (currently below 50%) by focusing on digital inclusion in the most remote areas. Promoted by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS) through GGPEN and its partners, Conecta Angola Comercial leverages the capabilities of ANGOSAT-2 to deliver high-quality internet access to businesses, institutions, and communities across the country.
