Head of State Attends African Basketball Championship Opening Ceremony

Luanda: Angolan President Joo Louren§o will attend the opening ceremony of the 31st edition of the African Men's Basketball Championship (AfroBasket 2025) today, Tuesday, at Kilamba Arena Pavilion in Luanda. The event will take place from the 12th to the 24th of this month. Following the opening ceremony, the Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Louren§o, will also attend the opening match of the championship between the Angolan and Libyan national teams.

According to Angola Press News Agency, sixteen African teams are participating in the championship, including Angola as the host, Tunisia as the defending champion, Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt, DR Congo, Mali, Uganda, Guinea, Libya, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Cameroon. The host cities for the competition are Luanda, with games at the Kilamba Arena Pavilion, which seats approximately 12,700 spectators, and Namibe, at the Welwitschia Mirabilis Multipurpose Pavilion, which seats approximately 3,500 spectators.

Angola has a rich history in AfroBasket, having hosted the event four times and winning the competition 11 times. The championships won by Angola include the years 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2013, making Angola the most successful team in AfroBasket history.
