Luanda: In 2025, Huila province emerged as the leader in tourist accessibility in Angola, surpassing Namibe, Cunene, and Benguela. This achievement was attributed to the increased flow of both domestic and foreign visitors, as highlighted by Carlos Bumba, the president of the Angolan Tourist Guides Association. According to Angola Press News Agency, the criteria for evaluating tourist accessibility were based on the autonomy, comfort, and safety of access routes leading to places of interest. Bumba highlighted that Huila stands out with attractions accessible without the need for a guide or hired driver. The availability of quality information and geo-referenced tourist spots on platforms like Google Maps further enhance its appeal. Throughout 2025, Huila maintained superior access conditions compared to the national average, enabling most of its main attractions to be reached by any vehicle type. In contrast, neighboring provinces struggled with difficult roads and limited access. Popular destinations in H uila included the Tundavala Gorge, Cristo Rei Monument, Serra da Leba Viewpoint, Huíla Waterfall, Tchivinguiro Caves, and Huíla Mission. In Namibe, despite the popularity of attractions like the local bay, dunes, Baía dos Tigres, and Iona National Park, access challenges limited tourism. Cunene faced similar issues, with tourists visiting the King Mandume memorial, Ruacaná Falls, and Africa's largest baobab tree near Ombandja, but poor access was a hindrance. In Benguela, popular sites like Praia Morena and Baía Azul were noted, but access concerns remained. Bumba emphasized that Huila's established infrastructure allowed for safer and more comfortable travel to attractions compared to Namibe, Cunene, and Benguela. Key infrastructure improvements in Huila contributed to longer tourist stays and more diverse activities. Despite advancements in Huila, Bumba acknowledged ongoing access challenges in areas with high tourism potential, such as Hunguéria Falls in Chibia and Bicuar National Park. In 2025, Huila w elcomed 12,777 foreign tourists, an increase of 10,227 visitors, driven by the province's natural, historical, and cultural attractions and improved access. Additionally, 129,508 domestic tourists visited the region, marking an increase of 123,658 from the previous year.
