Luanda: International Masters (IM) David Silva and Maria Domingos were crowned absolute national chess champions in the men's and women's categories, respectively, on Tuesday.
According to Angola Press News Agency, David Silva, representing the BG5 Chess Academy, claimed the title in the men's category with seven points over nine rounds played in the province of Uge. He secured his victory after a draw in the final round against FIDE Master (MF) Domingos Jºnior from the Macovi School, who finished in fourth place with six points. Silva is also celebrated for being a three-time African junior champion, having secured victories in Angola in 2014, Seychelles in 2016, and Togo in 2017.
In the women's category, Maria Domingos of the Giga Chess Group emerged victorious with eight points. She outperformed FIDE Master Renelsa Taiane from Rene Castilho/Cunene, who ended the competition in eighth place with 5.5 points.
The championship featured a total of 65 competitors, comprising 29 men and 36 women from the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Malanje, Cunene, Bengo, and Uge.
